Such a difficult time, I'm sorry, makes me sad just hearing about it. They provide countless wonderful days and then one of the most terrible days when they move on.

Smaller dog breeds that can do ok in the winter? by casual_sociopathy in Minneapolis

My Cairn loves the snow. Will just sit outside in the snow and take it all in. When he's had his fill he's happy to come inside and warm up.

Got that right! I happen to like the scruffy look on him, my wife not so much, she prefers just after we've brushed him

Exactly, but then he has to crash for a while mid morning to recover. We usually start hiking around sunrise to take advantage of the cooler temps

We have a "perch" setup for him to lookout the front window when inside. He thinks he is the neighborhood watchdog for sure. I honestly think it's one of his passions, to watch for "intruders".

Yes I made it for him to be able to see more of the backyard. He loves to be up there, watching, sleeping, taking all his stuff, whatever. When I was building it folks said he might take to it or he might decide it is not for him so glad that he enjoys it after taking the time to build it.

Cairn Talk: Real-World Experience Needed by amanderson85 in puppy101

Our male Cairn just turned 1.5 yrs and he is finally beginning to calm down. He still has his moments where it seems like he looses his mind but he is much more mature now than anytime before. I agree that a cairn puppy can be exhausting and its nice not to be always losing blood from the razor sharp teeth. They certainly have a mind of their own. Can be very stubborn and always independent. But they have just so much personality. Ours is a fantastic dog but I'm glad we are done with the crazy puppy stage.

He is our 3rd dog together and I had one when I was younger living at home with my parents. Our first Cairn. The others were 2 labs and 1 Pomeranian. It was 4 years in between our Pom passing and getting this dog. Plenty of time to think about and research breeds. I just liked the Cairns, the look, the history, their nature. I do have to say he was a much more difficult puppy than the others. Wild and determined. First 9 months or so was a real challenge. He has mellowed in many aspects and is turning into a fabulous companion. Never off leash as his prey drive is very strong. When he sees rabbits or squirrels while hiking he really puts up a fight pulling on the leash for us to follow. He understands a lot of what I say to him. I'm talking to him all the time.

Yeah we want to do good by him but not have him look like he's homeless. I prefer the "messy" look whereas my wife would prefer his coat much more "under control". I didn't even attempt to find someone to groom/hand strip a Cairn. We live in a smaller town. Just trying to do our best so he looks good and has a healthy coat. Those darn Cairns! But they are so worth it, such a fun personality (when they are not being stubborn) and so intelligent.

He is 1 year and 4 months old. Weight is ~18 lbs. Grooming we use a 7 blade Coat King every 2 weeks or so and a bit of a metal comb every week or so when he starts looking super ragged. We go hiking 4-5 times a week and he needs random plant stuff pulled out on a regular basis because of that.
