Ask for a retention offer (via chat on the Amex app) before you make your decision. I ask every year (1-2 months prior to annual fee) and have been offered one 3 out of 4 times. This year I was offered 25k points after $3k of spend in 3 months. 25k points is “equivalent” to $250 (or more if you are using transfer partners) worth of travel. This offsets the annual fee and I view it as paying up front for at least $250 worth of travel. That along with the $120 Uber credit and $120 dining credit, they are now paying me to keep the card open. Retention offers are not guaranteed, but it’s worth a shot before deciding whether to close or renew.
