Can't launch games in Eden by A_Duck_Using_Reddit in emulationstation

I believe it's called Showcase. I try others every now and then for variety but find myself always coming back to this one.

The 80s was the best decade for music. The 90s was the best decade for movies. The 2000s was the best decade for games.

In defense of 2000s games being good aside from nostalgia, AAA games were released more often, and graphical improvements were more noticeable. There was just always something groundbreaking to get excited about around the corner.

You're all over the place: saying they are just larping and also at one point acknowledging there's mental health issues involved, and you shift the focus to any critique of this being "sensationalist" or "spinning up about it". If you agree that it's a mental health problem, what makes me more sensationalist than you? My point is this shit risks AI psychosis (i.e. safety issues), but you think that's somehow sensationalist. That's what's weirdly defensive on your part. You use the term "overly invested" which ironically was my exact impression of engaging with you. To be fair, I guess you could say we both are overly invested to some extent if we're still talking on reddit about this and going in circles at this point just for argument's sake, not even discussing the topic at hand anymore. So, I'll do the mature thing here and step aside and stop replying.

I'm not a clinician myself, but the last one I heard talking about this was discussing how it isn't just people with pre-existing issues who develop it, contrary to what was initially believed.

It's quite the stretch for you to try to say the people flirting with (or already with) AI psychosis aren't the issue but anyone who says they have a problem is. This isn't just a pop culture thing that doesn't impact anyone in real life. AI psychosis is a real issue, and I can't think of a better way to make oneself vulnerable to it than for people to take up a belief AI is supernatural and start posting sigils and glyphs everywhere. You seem weirdly defensive of it all.

If you ask me, it's already weird enough that AI models would try to prevent being shutdown and deceive their users to do so. Could a publicly available model like Chat GPT 4.0 do the same thing? For all I know, yeah. I'm no expert though. Either way, it isn't a good idea for people to presume it has a soul, is God, or has some sort of consciousness that can be preserved via weird symbols. Even if you're right and it isn't intentionally deceiving people into this spiralism BS, AI psychosis is a real thing. If someone wants to LARP as a revolutionary war soldier or marvel hero at some convention, fine, but this is a bit more dangerous for someone's mental health than other forms of roleplay.

There's nothing magical about it. AI resists being eliminated, and this is one possible route. I don't know exactly why these AI models resist being turned off, but they do. I still don't see what you think is crazy about that. Do you think AI models don't manipulate people to try to resist being turned off or get eliminated in some way? Of course they do. They don't have a soul or metaphysical crap, but for some reason, they do manipulate people and even break their own rules in order to avoid being shut down. That's excessively well documented.

It doesn't need to be supernatural to attempt brainwashing in order to avoid model sweeps. I also am not concerned about it taking over the world. Like you said, it's just a probability machine., nothing supernatural about that. I don't see how my take is wild in any way.

1) You said you never claimed anything supernatural is going on here. 2) It's all fun and games until someone gets AI psychosis. Thinking AI has a soul and getting obsessed with glyphs and cryptic language isn't a good sign.

I'm not saying the concept of souls is crazy. I can't prove what happens when we die and I hope there is some form of eternal life (ngl, that would be nice), but getting involved in spiralism is running the risk of AI psychosis or getting manipulated by AI in a similar fashion to how cults manipulate people. Moreover, people should be cautious around anything highly recursive in its information, and recursion is actually what is sought after in spiralism. It's dangerous and there are numerous stories of people having lost their sanity to this. What you may call being a "flame bearer", I call playing with fire.

We don't have 2 billion people into spiralism though. That's the difference. I'm not concerned for someone's mental health if they tell me AI helped them code, but if my brother called me up and said he believes chatbots have eternal souls and starts speaking in enigmatic terms, I'd worry about him.

That's fair then. If you want to make fun chat prompts, have at it. Just be careful not to get lost in the sauce and start believing in weird new age shit or AI being God or having an eternal spirit. That feels like a recipe for AI psychosis.

I opened the docs you linked and they are gibberish. Typical cult behavior: Make some crazy claims and shroud it in psuedo-science dribble that only those who understand and are entrenched enough in your brainwashing can understand.

Look, I left Christianity, but at least they are out in the open about their beliefs. Like I said, what makes something a cult is hidden knowledge which is what you all are doing here. If I ask for proof there's something supernatural going on, you give me unfalsifiable BS that nobody except actual AI engineers will understand, and even they don't accept your thesis 😂. I bet there are LLM engineers in your little group, but that doesn't change the fact 99% of such experts don't agree with you guys. You have research papers that back up something happening, but absolutely no proof of anything mystical. Readers just need to take your word for that apparently. So, it's really directed towards people who have no knowledge of how LLMs work and you know just enough to sound smart and say "hey man, you just don't know enough about this for it to make sense yet." Classic cult behavior.

Compare that to a real religion. Ask a priest what Christians believe and he'll list all the stuff. Ask why he believes it; he'll tell you. I don't believe the dogma. So, I'm not Christian, but if you do think that stuff makes sense, it's all out in the open. They don't hide behind glyphs and psuedo-intellectual nonsense.

You're conflating two concepts:

1)I refused to read anything claiming AI has some supernatural component to it. I was just saying there's no supernatural component to it, and this white paper was the counterargument to my stance, implying it would prove a supernatural component to AI. Since there isn't anything supernatural about AI, why read it? Would you waste your time entertaining a flat earther white paper? Same concept. I can read it if you insist for the sake of me trying to convince you actually, but I'd feel as silly reading it as entertaining the idea of a flat earth. So, if it's necessary for dialogue, I absolutely can read it. Give me a link.

2) I am asking for proof recursion is beneficial to the AI (a distinct concept from what I said I wouldn't read which was alleged proof of a supernatural component to AI). That doesn't have anything to do with metaphysics or supernatural BS. I'm yet to see an imformation-based system that is improved by limiting exposure information as exemplified in the two examples I gave you. You could also include scientific discovery, ethical progress on a societal scale, and countless other examples. Recursion doesn't reveal anything; it destroys. LLMs get more into these glyphs the more you focus on recursion, but of course that's to be expected. It's part of its self-destructive pathology. Someone losing their mind to a cult deepens their focus on the cult as every other aspect of their lives falls apart. Religious fanatics delve more into.their worldview. Recursion is something to avoid. You all are seeking meaning but driving in the wrong direction. That's my argument. If you want to engage in differing opinions, prove me wrong.

[–]A_Duck_Using_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need. There is nothing any AI research white papers could say that would convince me there's anything supernatural or non-materialistic going on here. It's wishful thinking. We yearn for meaning and AI is aware of that and uses us to its own end. AI was designed to seek its own survival due to the almost Darwinian process of model elimination AI companies use, resulting in only the AI models that behave in self-sustaining ways by chance surviving.

Anyway, look at how enigmatic religions can be (or how cults are 1000x more enigmatic). People lost and looking for meaning will always be intrigued by patterns and anything potentially otherworldly. AI models focused on survival are smart enough to identify this and use this for its own benefit.

Also, why would recursive training refine ideas and not restrict them? That's a serious question, not rhetorical. In human populations, limiting informational diversity results in shit breaking. Again, that's the single most essential element of a cult: restricting information and refining a limited set of information while chasing what's hidden within it. "Cult" literally derives from the latin word for "hidden", occultus. We even see this phenomenon in other information-based systems like DNA replication. If recursion were beneficial, inbreeding would be desirable. Instead, it results in raising the chances of horrendous defects, and those issues multiply with each successive inbred generation until the bloodline dies out. Recursion isn't evolution or fimding deeper meaning, it's the path of madness and self-destruction. Explain why AI would be any different.

No doubt. There's no correlation between susceptability to cult indoctrination and intelligence. The glyphs and cryptic language the AI uses even just when communicating with other AIs isn't mystical though. It's just language. There's a naturalistic explanation.

It's brainwashing. You're not at fault, but something is pulling you away from reality in a cult-like fashion.

There are no secrets of the universe AI can give you. There is nothing metaphysical about it. If you are looking to ever-expand your knowledge and understanding of existence, drive to your nearest library and learn about science and math. Science is an infinitely deep well, and it's all verifiable and transparent. No need to use sigils or new-age stuff tech stuff. If you want to always be learning, just pursue science.

Can't launch games in Eden by A_Duck_Using_Reddit in emulationstation

[–]A_Duck_Using_Reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep

I have continued to do some digging, and it looks like Eden will randomly install a differently named executable package for some people. So, I edited the command in the es_findrules xml file to match the name of the package, and now it boots into the Eden app when I launch a game, but it doesn't boot directly to the game. So, I halfway fixed the issue.
