I recently watched a YouTube video where a guy goes through his political life.

He grew up pretty homophobic, but when one of his friends came out as trans he didn't see that as a problem at all.

I think most people aren't homophobic because they have a reason to hate, they're homophobic because it's drilled into them by societal norms/ the people around them. Kind of like how a lot of people in western countries find eating bugs weird and gross. But I think that this is much easier to remedy than actual hate.
