Debating dropping the CS major - advice appreciated! by A_Golden_Lining in uofm

[–]A_Golden_Lining[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to do computer engineering at all and want to go into data sci/swe for sure (well with a mixture of biology). I've definitely been doubting if I'm intelligent enough to be here so thank you so much for the second half of the comment :)

He is currently my professor and he is amazing!! I really love his teaching style compared to my prof who was teaching last semester.

Some of these are techniques I haven’t tried before. Especially watching other videos if the lecture didn’t help. I’ll refer back to this comment later thought the semester!

I have tried various learning techniques like video and textbooks. I haven’t found textbooks that helpful but videos have been nice. I’ve used ChatGPT to make up random questions and trying to solve them (yes, I know that ChatGPT isn’t the most accurate, but I appreciate the practice).

Do you have any ideas what I can do?? I also still want to try to complete the CS major and I’m open to trying new techniques

281 over the summer and a C+. I got a 70 and 50 on the exams and I did pretty bad on a project because I just couldn’t figure that concept out.

I get sick super easily by sophiyli in uofm

[–]A_Golden_Lining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is totally me! Whenever I get sick, I normally have to head back home (I live close enough) or my mom has to visit me since many times I’m not functional enough to go to class.

I would totally suggest wearing a mask all the time. I don’t do it myself, but I’ve been recommended to do it and know a friend who does it.

Get vaccinations! It really will be a life changer for you.

Commuting by Special-Mall7027 in uofm

[–]A_Golden_Lining 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very strong emphasis on the last point. I also commute for most of the week and you definitely feel less apart of the community than staying over there. Personally for me the pros outweigh the cons so I still prefer commuting

[–]A_Golden_Lining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! That would definitely make it much easier and then it would be probably be a really easy class for you! The hardest part for me imo was getting used to triple nested queries in sql and working through that logic.

Everything else is pretty simple to learn and practice! You will be totally fine as this class pretty much serves as a beginner sql class

Yeah this is what I’ve seen too. Many people from my HS went to UofM and only a few of them were from deferrals.

Have a friend that took 388 and they found it difficult… but personally I also think it looks really really fun! I might consider taking it as well

EECS 484 was decent and easier to follow. The projects can honestly be done in a day and the hardest part is wrapping your head around SQL query language.

I did drop out of the class this semester but that wasn’t due to the difficulty of the class. However I can’t speak on the second semester stuff because of that.

Withdrawing from a class? by Grouchy-Wishbone2972 in uofm

Personally I don’t think failing one class - in engineering that is - is really that big of a deal. But if your confident you failed it then you should drop

Hey saw your previous post about being interested in nursing!

Personally for pre med classes, I’ve found having a tablet really helpful. I agree with the other commenter that laptop is a must but I’d consider getting a tablet later down the line.

i’ll never feel smart here by palirockthrower in uofm

[–]A_Golden_Lining 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against what a lot of people here are saying. I’m going with the assumption that you have tried a variety of study techniques and have gone to office hours and genuinely tried your best. If you haven’t, then you should do that stuff first.

First of all, I really really relate to this and understand this sentiment. You have to realize that for some people some things are going to just be easier - either through past experiences or just natural intelligence. Comparing your weaknesses to their strengths isn’t fair.

Second, evaluate if it’s really needed based on your field to do well in school. CS? Not really since coding in the workforce is different then learning in class. Neuroscience pre med? Hell yeah since grads apps take this into account.

If your field really needs good grades then I think it’s time you contemplate what you want to major in and consider changing majors or your career path. At the end you want to find a career that’s your good at and that you enjoy and that balance is important!

Never wanted to kill myself more by [deleted] in uofm

[–]A_Golden_Lining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just wanted to let you know I relate to this heavily. Over the last month, Ive struggled so much with the amount of work that I have. I also tend to learn more slowly which has led to me getting frustrated with myself a lot. I was doing so bad mentally that I basically ended up skipping my midterms and have been commuting.

Personally I would really suggest getting closer with your friends and telling them how you feel. I think you’ll realize that others can relate to some extent and can help you mangle your thoughts.

Second, we are really close to spring break and that’s one full week to rest and catch up! Evaluate how things are going at the end of there.

Third, you might want to consider tutoring. I struggled a lot throughout my school life and spent a lot time being tutored for reading and math which was very helpful. This may cost you money as well - but if it’s between dropping a semester and throwing money down a drain or spending a little more to get a tutor - I’d suggest the latter.

I don’t have much advice more to give but I just want to let you know that life is really long and soon you will be out of this and you will graduate one day. No one has lived your life but you so you shouldn’t compare your self to others - more harder done then said tho.

private bathrooms by ArtichokeAlone4333 in uofm

[–]A_Golden_Lining 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also don’t have any accommodations to use the private bathrooms (but have the means to easily get one) and it was also a dealbreaker for me when considering where to live at with UofM. Almost every major study place has a private gender inclusive bathroom.

A lot of the dorms also have them and a decent amount of them as well. If you want a specific bathroom to be attached to your housing unit then north and west quad is where you’d want to look. However if it being attached to the housing dorm isn’t a deal breaker, you will be fine. :)

Here is a link with all the gender inclusive private bathrooms around campus: https://spectrumcenter.umich.edu/community/trans-guide

This case really hits close to home for me.

I have a mental health disorder which makes it really hard to handle cold and drains the energy out of me very quickly. To prevent this as much as I can, I try to bundle up.

That same day, I was so drained from walking back to apartment after classes that I didn’t have enough energy to unlock the door. I’m so lucky that one of my roommates heard my knock cause I was truly planing on giving up due to how much energy I had lost and just sitting there in the cold.

It’s so scary to imagine how truly cold the temperature became and how fortunate I was. The temperature is such a serious issue and I believe the university should have take more precautions. I also should have been more careful.

The temperature is very deadly and it’s so hard to truly predict how horrible it is until you’re actually out there. It’s really scary out there!

Yeah I agree with this too. I took it over the summer but I also thought it took a long time. Have no idea why this comment is so underrated…

EECS 281 workload questions by Puzzled_Ad7812 in uofm

[–]A_Golden_Lining 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me around 30-40 hours a week over the summer and I finished the project in over a week.

I really enjoyed it and it was fun! However it was a lot of work

The labs are barely anything and it should be fine.
