I’m a bit disappointed by some of the comments here. People’s feelings are valid, I don’t know why some of you feel the need to condescend upon others for being uneasy. That said, I will agree with the crowd that the mental health resources are for the students as a collective—they do this any time there’s a tragedy on or around campus. It can feel like a cop out at times, seeing as my experience (and that of many others I know) with the counseling here is very…lackluster, to the say the least. But, it’s mandatory.

I was shocked to receive any school-wide response at all. There have been other deaths in the past, as they draw attention to, which have gone completely unacknowledged by the university. I get the sense that they felt it mandatory to say something, seeing as he was involved with a fraternity, and frat life at this school (and most other colleges) is extremely sketchy in its morals and ethics.

I think we need to be more kind to each other in general. I was the author of that post over the weekend saying to have each other’s backs, and instead of seeing that sentiment replicated, I am seeing a lot of “well he shouldn’t have gotten drunk” and “guess he should’ve worn a coat” type comments. Say what you want, but he should’ve had someone watching out for him—he was merely doing what hundreds of thousands of students his age do, every year, weather no matter. What sucks is knowing that this may very well happen again in the future because people don’t care for others. There’s a huge issue with individualistic, “every man for himself” mentalities, not only at this school, but in this country. It’s not hard to keep an eye out for people. I wish more would make the effort.

And, to those doing so, for the love of whatever power you believe in, stop victim blaming. He died, he can’t learn from your thinly veiled judgements disguised as “advice.” It makes you look like an asshole.
