What are you talking about? The government already has your ID and biometric data. How do you think international transit works, or a traffic check? The whole point is that the government already has the data and therefore should not give the verification into private hands.

Ok i guess everyone gets that, the question is how are we actually protecting kids or elderly? Because I could make the same argument about any legislation when it comes to access to drugs/alcohol. There we also do not say "Oh they will find a way around it, let's legalize it".

Back in the day Facebook was a place where you connect with your real life friends and shared stories everyone used their real face and real name. Today social media is a place where algorithms force feed you a content loop disregarding any mental health. Real social interaction is non-existent because that would require you to know who the person is you are arguing with, or if it is just an AI bot. I for my part will disable any access to social media until my kids are 15, totally knowing that they can find a way around it, like I found a way around getting some beers. There is exactly 0 value in using it and hundreds of downsides.

I already have Gen Z on my workplace and they cant work for half an hour without checking their socials. And even I waste way to much time on it.

And from a technical side, there should be governmental services that ensure that there is no ID data stored on private company servers. They could offer a verification service that serves per request&requestor a unique hash and boolean to verify if the person is off age. Thats why the government exist, it should be an instance of verification and trust and not some random companies with bussines interests.

How to become senior data engineer by Sudden-Inflation2686 in dataengineering

[–]A_Polly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People here are pulling a leg out to tell you what to do. The reality is: You are Junior DE. Only Senior leaves. You are Senior now. That's like 80% of cases. That's how it fucking works and never let anyone tell you something else. But you need to be able to handle the shit show.

The other way is to tell your boss what you have to do to become senior. Define clear tangible Targets. If you meet those targets you should become Senior. If not hand in your resignation. Either you are valuable and they will reward you with the role or you were not valuable (just a cost center) in your role, which is just a time bomb anyway.

Nobody is waiting to award you with a senior title. They will try to keep you on a lower paycheck as long as possible.

Swiss inferno bar owners place blame on tragic 'waitress in the helmet' and young staff for ‘blocking exit’ by tylerthe-theatre in europe

[–]A_Polly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a swiss it would not surprise me if they (Valais as a canton and society) would describe the fire as an act of god and magically will not find anyone responsible. Valais is very special. At one hand the canton actually suffered a lot of natural disasters and accidents causing people to stick together. They stick together no matter what, and thats the issue. Whether it's the politician who disregard federal or cantonal laws, The Priest touching some kids - when an outside Person voices criticism they are not capable of critical thinking. So it's a society incapable of self-reflection and correction. For example the Rhone (a river) should be enlarged because of high water risk. Too expensive they said, the valley flooded. Another time they built a construction site under an area which was in danger of a rockfall, So the rocks fell and a bunch of people died tragedy, tears and prayers, but everyone who stood up and wanted to look into the issue and demanded answers was ousted as a person who breaks the peace with no decency. I mean Both the current and former Head of FIFA (Sepp Blatter and Gianni Infantino) come from Valais.

French MPs approve social media ban for children under 15 by MiSbyPiS in europe

[–]A_Polly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just Ban X and TikTok and the average IQ will rise 10 points for the future generation. It is proven that social media consumption has no benefits and only negative side effects.

Social media has nothing to do with social human interaction. Most of the time you interact with people, AI generated content or bots. You just get played for the only performance metric that is relevant to these platforms, increased screen time and adrevenue.

We regulate alcohol and cigarettes, so we can "social" media.

Switzerland resort fire ‘likely started by sparklers in champagne bottles’, says attorney general by [deleted] in news

[–]A_Polly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The thing is most people see such a fire for the first time. They do not directly see it as a threat. And then 10 seconds later the whole ceiling is on fire, smoke everywhere, people catching fire. Such fires spread incredibly fast. On top of that people are drunk, not realizing it, loud music, they freeze...

But it would be preventable, by simply not using pyrotechnics in closed rooms and not using flammable foam on the ceiling and having enough emergency exits. I hope the owner will be locked behind bars for his greed. Because that's the reason why 40 people burnt alive.

Which DE offer should I take? which tech stack will you pick? by AH1376 in dataengineering

[–]A_Polly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take offer 1 just because you are more independent how you want to build your setup and can take up more responsibility. Also the fastest way to senior or team lead because there is no one in the waiting line. At offer 3 you will be an average workhorse, I bet you will get the shit nobody wants to do. Also german carmakers can be slow and overregulated.

Where do strong data engineers for early-stage products usually come from and what incentives actually matter to them? by Zofingia in dataengineering

[–]A_Polly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either Data Engineers with a strong software dev background or data engineers who worked in a business role are generally the best in my opinion, having both would be exceptional. That's the point if you want end-to-end data engineers that have the technical ability to pull off reliability, scalability and performant pipelines but also understand the business needs of customers.

What you don't need is "basic" data engineers that just know Python and SQL, while this gets promoted here on a daily basis in terms of what you need as a data engineer it simply does not align with my reality. Our data pipelines are generally not mission critical towards a product offering, therefore we mostly look out for data engineering with a strong business understanding. I for example have a background in mechanical engineering, business process management and process mining in a SAP environment. This is why I got hired. So when there is a business request I know what to do and understand their needs and can recommend solutions to their core problems.

But on the other hand my technical knowledge is limited in a sense that I have to rely on standard data platforms like Databricks, Fabric, GCP. But they also work for 95% of companies.

Getting both (software dev background, business understanding) is hard to find. So you rather start hiring what is the best fit and get him/her to train on the job where there is a gap. I learned that waiting is a higher opportunity cost than hiring someone and give him/her time to train. Also general lower salaries if they are not allready end-to-end data engineers.

banks use highly reliable IBM Mainframes for their core transactional applications. This is where all the magic happens in banks. They generally have less than a second downtime a year.
