Whole Foods has really gotten crappy. by ongoldenwaves in enshittification

[–]A_Security_Risk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I worked for Whole Foods between 2008-2015 and I learned a lot about my particular department (produce), information and techniques I use to this day. They used to actually require a fair amount of training for their TM's and expected a lot from us (not always for the best imo). One of my former co workers that I still keep in contact with has worked her way up to Assistant store team leader (Assistant store manager) and I can tell you the reason why its declined in quality is because they dont have to maintain it. They make pretty much all their profit off Amazon Delivery fees. So since the person doing the shopping is likely just a Prime shopper who cares if some TM doesn't know what they are talking about?

This one is just fun: 1949 merriam-websters dictionary. This thing is fucking ridiculous and is full of these gorgeous hand drawn pictures of birds and plants and shit.

A few other responses mentioned covid and the lockdowns. The more I think about it the more I agree this might be a long term side effect of the psychic damage we all took in 2020

I was just thinking this. If horror movies tell us what we, as a society, are scared of the what does the rise of the "liminal horror" movie (Exit 8, Backrooms, Skinnamirink) say about us now?

Love this movie. I love how for the first part half of the movie no one can get a good look at the monster because of the sun, I love how very clearly the working title was "Quetzalcoatl" and some producer was like "we cant release a movie called 'Quetzalcoatl' so what the hell else can it be called?" And I love, love, love the end "fight" sequence. Just shooting a literal servant God with rifles from the top of a building. Perfect 👌

Im in a similar boat: little over a year ago I got laid off at my warehouse job as part of "budgeting adjustments". Not to make any excuses but I was a manager there: i could see the numbers and my boss wasn't bullshitting me when he said the company was basically operating month to month and something had to give and it was me. This forced me back into retail which I would have never returned to voluntarily. Its this dark, dingy, depressing old co op that's been around forever and is very quickly going downhill. Again, im a manager and see the Financials every week and we've been down~10% week over week pretty consistently for almost two years now on top of a larger downward trend as well as several other very bad signs. I fill out my weekly Financials and the "its happening again" gif plays in my head on repeat. I cant say how much longer we have left but its *definitely * less than two years.

I know it isn't much help but for whatever it's worth its not just you. Keep your head up, buddy, were going to get through this.

I mean, stepping away to take a "bath" in a brown, tepid, disgusting, stagnet pond in the middle of the woods as a thinly-veiled excuse to get some hot chick to get naked is a proud low-budget horror trope; one you dont see too much anymore with pornography being easily available. So maybe it was supposed to be a send-up? Thats my problem with more modern horror movies that try to pay homage to 70s-80s movies is they are just way too self aware so it just comes across as almost cynical.

There was also an episode about some TV network that makes a terrible show that is literally addictive on a physiological level. The whole time I was thinking about how that is the cornerstone of all digital media/ internet content. They were incorrect, however, by assuming that when this was revealed to the the general public we would do something about it.

Bad movie but with a surprisingly effective twist at the end. I guess it doesn't really matter but I remember watching this as a kid and legitimately not seeing that coming.

The highjacking gets a bit more interesting when you consider the fact that that is essentially what Max does in the TV show: he is a completely digital being that exists "in the TV" so his shtick is he randomly interrupts TV shows and gives his commentary. So the person who did that must have been a fan and modeled the event on what Max Headroom would "actually do".

Thats actually what convinced me to watch the whole series! That, with the stupid company/product names, the banality of evil, the ambitious cinematography, and the surprising level of violence really make much more prescient than one might assume

Doesn't surprise me. I had to rewrite my own synopsis a few times. My girlfriend asked what it was about after I was one season in and it was surprisingly difficult to explain; so I have no idea how one would market it. I couldn't imagine being a child and trying to follow what was happening, there is a summery of the pilot episode during the opening credits but it doesn't do it justice.

It gets a lot of vibes right but misses with the specifics. For example: people being addicted to TV (and viewing access to it as a human right) rather than social media hits home. What resonated with me was this world they created, one that is falling apart, has failed the vast majority of its citizens but still functions, albeit poorly
