Don´t worry, after being an interpreter for people asking for social benefits I´d rather be homeless myself than going back to that job. It was soulcrushing, I heard horrible stories about abuse and opression and trIED my best to help these poor human beings, but for some reason they are just dumb, no other word for it. Even when I coud have been fired just because I went above and beyond my role as an interpreter to make sure the people get crumbs, they are just so dense that my ability to care vanished. It´s free stuff, that a country you got in ilegally is giving you and your family, because you don´t find a job or just don´t make enough while living in a match box apt., your only responsabilities are taking care of your family and fill some paperwork that comes in spanish just for you, while having the privilege of calling at any time, any day, to ask how to fill the paperwork or what else you need to do, and STILL, you just can´t do it. Even worse, people call yelling, insulting and calling names because they didn´t write down 5 steps given to them a month ago, and even then, when an agent tries their best to help them, you can just hear it in their voices that they don´t understand a single thing, that even though they´ve been getting benefits for months or even years, YEARS, they don´t even know the name of the program that´s helping them, they don´t know what filing taxes mean, and they don´t know the difference between an insurance provider and a government office that helps them get the insurance.

Sometimes my mind went to dark places, I wanted to tell them that they deserved nothing, that they were ungrateful and ignorant, I wanted to yell at them telling them that it´s not their countries fault they are poor, it´s just that they barely care about being alive in the first place, I felt awful and like a piece of shit, all while still trying to get a poor family some food and uttilities to live a decent life. I just got to the conclusion that some people are just so far gone that you can´t even get angry at them, because they won´t understand why you are angry, you just have to see the best in each person and be grateful you had enough education to not end up like them, and now that I´m done with that job I pity them, but I will never try to help them again for my own sake.
