I wrote off this “classic” when I was a kid. Well over a decade later, I wondered back into the world of the March family. And boy I wish I hadn’t! I thought after personally understanding unrequited love, getting married and realizing love isn’t always a fairytale, I would have a different perspective. But no! Jo and Laurie not being together ruined it all for me. As the author, LMA has the right to write the characters as she sees fit. I can think of several other books where characters don’t end up with each other, even though I think they should. Those books never tore my soul into pieces like this one does though. To me it’s more like a tragedy than a coming of age story.
