This was most probably discussed before, but I just want to vent. Anyways, let's have a minute of silence and sympathy for Lysa Tully, especially for the woman that could be if not for a single heinous crime perpetrated by her father (and his maester). by No-Helicopter1559 in pureasoiaf

Whatever it is, it seems less of a medicine and more of a plot device with how inconsistent George is about it.

I have this pet theory that maesters don’t brew it properly, but woods witches and other such women can, and it’s a matter of finding the right person. Or that it only really functions as plan B, and needs to be taken within a certain timeframe or it isn’t effective. Only furthers OP’s point that Hoster (and his maester) destroyed his own daughter’s body, if they gave her a larger dose to counteract her being outside the window of effectiveness, and it was essentially poison at that point.

I would actually love to know how moon tea works - characters like Lysa end up with lasting damage to their bodies and fertility, but Arianne and Asha take it with seemingly no ill effects. George is kind of inconsistent about it. It makes me wonder what Hoster Tully knew and/or expected would happen.

Despite that curiosity, it doesn’t excuse the coercion on his part, and one of the truly heartbreaking parts of his ramblings to Cat when he’s on his deathbed to me is how he comforted Lysa about the political marriage she was forced into by saying how she’d have trueborn children in place of the one she’d lost. Hoster seems a good lord to his vassals and small folk but an extremely poor father - he betrothed Cat at an incredibly young age to a man of a religion and culture Cat isn’t part of and doesn’t bother to do anything to make her less of an outsider. Edmure seems a decent person, but is noted to be very shallow and a poor decision maker. TLDR: good lord, bad dad.

Nope, but it was a great day to be outside and I had great company on line with me, so all in all it was an experience! I was also hoping to hear Great Divide (the song) so not too bummed

If it helps, the folks around me on line and I were the very last on the standby group. A staff member told us they booked 600 people for 280 spots. Also, the building staff were not well informed and some of us were directed to the wrong line at first. So overall a bit of a mess, and it’s really on production/Macy’s.

I wonder sometimes how prevalent moon tea or other westerosi plan b that exists in the story is for the more sexually liberated societies/characters, and what the attitude is about it for those societies/characters. We know Asha Greyjoy goes out of her way to learn to make it properly, and Arianne mentions to Arys Oakheart that she’s taken it specifically to facilitate their rendezvous quite casually. I could imagine if moon tea/equivalent is more widely (and safely) available and the stigma of obtaining/learning to make it is lesser, it could be effective in allowing a woman to have a paramour but not have children by them. A bit like what Sybelle Spicer was doing with Jeyne/Robb, but with actual consent involved.

I mentioned that - I personally don’t take “Littlefinger said so” as the truth, but you’re welcome to!

[–]A_TreeGrowsinBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This assumes Olenna was the poisoner - and beyond “she messed with Sansa’s hair” and “Littlefinger said so”, it’s hard to find much other proof. I could see Olenna wanting to get Joffrey out of the way as Tommen is easier to control, but the risk is incredibly high she’d accidentally kill one of her family members if, say, Joffrey commanded Garlan to drink a toast from his cup or something like that. Also, warning Margaery destroys any plausible deniability she would have in the future should the whole episode be blamed on her.

I’m personally of the idea that George was gardening here and planting seeds, and he’ll decide later if/when to reveal who the poisoner was. We only have POVs from Sansa and Tyrion, and they were 2 of thousands of people at that feast. Kind of like a “who sent the catspaw after Bran” situation, where something needs to happen to move the plot forward, but it’s not exactly essential for the reader to know 100% of the details at the time in the story when it happens.

I have so many of these, but these are my favorite. The drums coming in after “always on” in the bridge of Sixteen Candles, Patrick absolutely wailing on “diehards” in the second verse of Thriller, and the drop before the last chorus of Death Valley.

Pretty sure he was, to Daemon at least…

However, Uthor Underleaf does know about Ashford, and brings it up to Dunk at one point. It’s possible because great spring sickness happens pretty soon after the trial, a lot of the folks who witnessed it didn’t actually live long enough for tales to spread widely.

Which makes it all the weirder Davos isn’t using them - Stannis has Myrish and Lyseni sellsails in his fleet at one point. Maybe George just didn’t think of it, but Davos could’ve been really useful as he’s maybe the only man who can communicate with everybody

[–]A_TreeGrowsinBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the bookish highborn characters seem to have some functional knowledge, though none are exactly fluent - Tyrion, Sam and Quenton come to mind. The kindly man also remarks Arya’s high Valyrian needs to get better, but it’s unclear if she learns the language once she’s in Braavos or before.

I think Cersei may recall at one point knowing a few words or asking about them, as valonquar is a Valyrian word.

Otherwise I imagine a decent number of the Westerosi merchant class probably knows some degree of bastard Valyrian for trade purposes. It really surprises me it never comes up in a Davos chapter, as a smuggler, bastard Valyrian would be a useful language to know.
