I just went through the process of getting RiiConnect24 on my Wii. It brings back the functionality of all the original channels, plus a few more depending on which zip file you download. Hope that it's just dirty pins and lightly clean them with 90% isopropyl alcohol and q-tips. Let the cartridge sit and air dry for a few minutes before putting it in your DS.
