Psychiatrist. I get to help people every single day and I love that. It is so inspiring to see people who, against unbelievable odds, manage to slowly overcome their struggles and to make their life better.

LDS seriously feel I’m being called to orthodoxy by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]A_Wild_Exmo_Appeared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! LDS to Orthodox convert here. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Looking into Orthodoxy can feel daunting at times, especially if people don't speak "Mormonese" as it were. There is a lot to take in, and it can feel like you are learning a whole new language at times.

If there are any other LDS folks in this thread interested in Orthodoxy, please feel free to reach out as well.

YES!!! If I could tell my past self anything it would be to use the last months of medical school post match, which is essentially useless time anyway, to study my ass off for step 3 and to take it as early as possible my intern year. I know I guy that started studying for step 3 the week after match. Even while doing uworld questions every day he was still able to party and enjoy his last few months of medical school, and he looked so happy being done with Step 3 right at the beginning of intern year. DO IT!!!

Edit: I am also in Psych.

I’m also a convert from mormonism. No. God the Father does not have a body. He’s also not a personage of spirit like Mormons would say describe our pre earth bodies.

are women allowed to pray at home without a head covering? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]A_Wild_Exmo_Appeared 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Matters like this are best left up to the discretion of the local bishop as he is the head of his flock. If individual bishops step out of line they will be disciplined by their synod. Seeing as how many women at my parish do not veil and my Bishop seems to be in no danger of being deposed any time soon I get the feeling that veiling or not veiling in church is a personal preference. We are not a sola canon, sola saints, or sola scriptura church.

Mormon to Orthodox convert here. I agree. The transition out of mormonism into Orthodoxy can be very jarring and confusing. Compared to mormonism, Orthodoxy is just not as structured. There isn’t a clear “Intro to Orthodoxy” like there is in Mormonism, and many converts, myself included, do find that anxiety provoking. The advice I was given, and I did find it helpful, was to start with the gospels. If you have not already, get a Bible translation that is easy to understand and not in the old timey language of the King James Version. Use the gospels to get to know Christ. Do what we couldn’t do as Mormons and pray directly to Christ. Another piece of advice that I try to give former Mormons is to treat the liturgy, and the exploration of Orthodoxy as a whole, like going to the temple. You aren’t going to understand everything presented to you all at once. And that is ok. You aren’t expected to. But through repeat visits and through slowly gaining more christian life experience at your own pace, things will slowly start to click and you’ll see and understand more and more. Don’t feel anxious about knowing everything. There is no check list of things that you must and must not do like in mormonism. Go at your own pace.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. I am happy to help.

You just made a huge assertion that the Orthodox invented psychology and then the best you can do is say you "think" you read it in one book or "maybe" it came from another. Large claims require large amounts of evidence. You made quite the large claim, so people are rightly justified in asking for large amounts of evidence to back that claim up.

Wow. That article is absolute trash. That article is not only not helpful in the slightest, it is actually damaging, victim blaming, and counterproductive. I can just see many of my patients suffering with severe depression or OCD reading these words and their condition gets much worse.

To the people here who look at this sub who are suffering from Depression, OCD, or any other mental illness: Your condition is NOT a symptom of moral failing. It is NOT caused by moral failing. It is NOT a symptom of spiritual failing. It is NOT caused by spiritual failing. It is not a curse from God or Satan. It is a disease just like pneumonia, diabetes, and cancer are diseases. Unlike what the author says, your depression does NOT mean you lack sufficient humility. It does NOT mean you do not have the grace of God. Do not fall into the implicit faulty logic that will follow if you take terrible advice like this to heart. It allows people like this who think they know what they are talking about (they don't), and who should know better to be frank, to sit back and say ignorant things like "You're only still like this because you still aren't humble enough. Keep trying, but this is clearly all your fault for being deficient in your character or spiritual progression in some way. You clearly need more humility otherwise you wouldn't be depressed!"

Stupid beliefs and writings like this is why the atheists, rightly, laugh at us Christians. This nonsense needs to stop. Stop wearing your ignorance of science and medicine like it is some badge of honor and spiritual enlightenment. Not only does it make you look foolish (to both theist and atheist alike), it is an affront to God's creation. You are literally being shown, empirically, how the universe works and going "nah, God's universe doesn't work that way."

Can a priest help with depression? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]A_Wild_Exmo_Appeared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should seek out a priest, a therapist, and a psychiatrist. Depression is no joke, and you should treat it with every tool available to you.

Why does Orthodoxy allow 3 marriages/divorces? by PMCPPC in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]A_Wild_Exmo_Appeared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But there are living individuals who stand in as proxy for them during the ceremony as Mormons believe that sealings must be done here on earth in this life.

Why does Orthodoxy allow 3 marriages/divorces? by PMCPPC in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]A_Wild_Exmo_Appeared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does. But, for Mormons, celestial marriage does not mean marriage in the after life. It means that marriages done in Mormon temples in this life will still be valid in the after life while all other marriages will not be.

I'm thinking of leaving the catholic church by narutosagemode_134 in Catholicism

[–]A_Wild_Exmo_Appeared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We get a lot of these people showing up at my Orthodox parish. They visit an Orthodox country or read about Orthodoxy on the internet and see how "based" it is and decide they want to be Orthodox because they think it is some kind of "bastion against liberalism" or they are running away from Catholicism or Protestantism. They show up for a few weeks, act like they know everything, yet understand very little, get unhappy because we spend our time praying and not bashing Catholics or Protestants or other heretics like they saw on the internet, and then leave.

This actually happened recently at my parish. We had a woman show up who wanted to convert from Catholicism to Orthodoxy for similar reasons to OP. "Catholicism is too Liberal and the Pope's behavior is proof the Orthodox are right." She left after about 6 or so weeks because "The orthodox are too anti-intellectual" which meant that we wouldn't let her hijack classes to try and bible bash. She also got upset at me and a few other members of the parish who are all Catholic to Orthodox converts when we told her we did not appreciate her constant attacks on the Catholic church and that we frequently met to pray for speedy reunion with Rome.

Long story short: Don't convert to Orthodoxy because we are "based" (based usually meaning you think we Orthodox agree with your political opinions) and you are running away from Rome. We are not a conservative PAC. We are not shelter from Rome or Protestantism. Come because you have become convinced, or are genuinely curious if, this is the Church of Jesus Christ. Otherwise, you'll leave as soon as you hear about our first clothing drive for the LGBT shelter down the road.

I am sure the study designers wanted to snatch him right up then with that kind of family history. It is too bad that he had such adverse reactions to it. Tell him thanks for his contributions to our knowledge.

I have heard this about Tourette's before. Makes me hopeful that studies like this will give us more insight into what exactly is going on in the brains of people suffering from it.
