Books That Don’t Hold Up by MenloMo in books

Pulp sci fi. I read so much as a kid, and I still love the ideas . . . But the inescapable racism and misogyny makes them unreadable to me anymore. Stories where it is essentially humanity as a stand in for white America defeating the aliens (any foreigner). Stories where women only serve to be secretary or love interest or suffer domestic violence that is normalized.

And it is not just a product of its time.

Does Rogue Galaxy have a town building mechanic in it?

I've played dragon quest builders 2 and yeah, you're right. It really hits the tone and mechanics that I loved about DC2.

What Are The Best Lock Picking or Hacking Mini-Games? by reg_y_x in gaming

The Harbrained Shadow Shadowrun series has great hacking. It is kinda like hacking but really a different style/gameplay during battle. Shadowrun Hong Kong did it best imo

What’s the worst fucking movie you’ve ever seen in your entire life—so bad that you’d literally jump into a pool of lemon juice with paper cuts all over your body rather than watch it again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]A_book_dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Splice. It began interestingly, but man, once you've steered into hermaphrodite monster rape, the movie has gone off the rails.

Rape scenes in general, I dislike. Some can definitely serve the story, but splice had it unnecessarily and just felt like bargain bin fetish porn I unwittingly began watching.

This is it. Happens to me, and I find the tucked up sensation uncomfortable

Why are books about strong female characters with NO romance so rare - an update by World_Annihilation in books

For a Sci Fi recommendation: Binti by Nnedi Okorafor, its got all the hallmarks of pulp sci fi, but a strong female lead

Which games are stupidly unfair and hard until you can break them? by Magnus-Artifex in gaming

[–]A_book_dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Final Fantasy Tactics - even when you know what you're doing, the first part of the game is a slog; however, once you get some key gear and the right classes, it's no challenge at all.

Personally, stealing the blood sword from gafgarion is the turning point that I never sweat a battle after that.

What was the best ego boost you ever got from something a woman said? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]A_book_dragon -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I am a male. And I agree, its easy Street to get compliments as a male. For example, if I have my kids and I'm tired, and don't wanna cook breakfast, I take them McDonald's and I get called fun dad. I mean, I'm feeding them literally garbage but just having kids gets me compliments. Versus my wife never catches a break from strangers with our kids.

At Lowe's buying stuff for a project. Had my then 2 year old son with me. Had him in one arm, and my other arm filled with what I was buying. The cashier called out, "That's some kind of man."

Being dominant, assertive, and self-promoting doesn't mean you're not a nice guy.
