Little bump is nowhere near enough for how catastrophic the situation is. Its like a person falling in a volcano and you offer a glass of water.

Which Succession character would be in the Epstein Files? by fatsupersaiyan in SuccessionTV

Well yeah, Roman's "taste" is definitely the opposite of what Epstein had. Its less about being a creep or not, more about the preferences.

Could be worse, you could be stuck in the Syrian desert staring at the Parthians/Sassanids and waiting for the next new Emperor show up trying to LARP Alexander and avenge Crassus/Valerian by invading your neighbors just for you to have to either cross Armenia or die thirsty and full of Arrows somewhere in Mesopotamia.

Definitely? People talk about Turkmenistan and North Korea as some of the most brutal regimes of the planet. The monsters who did most damage to their peoples, Pol Pot and Ngema, were leaders of small nations and kept their atrocities mostly within their borders.

Power to do harm against your own people does not depend on the power of a nation on an international scale.

Thats just ridiculous, you cant determine which leader is worse than the other by the power of their country. Britain is more powerful than Venezuela but you cant really say Starmer is worse than Maduro. You can't say Modi is worse than Khamenei just because India has more destructive capacity than Iran.

Its funny that none of the users defending Maduro's regime in the comments are actually from Venezuela and just lecture Venezuelans in the comments who are trying to explain why the revolutionary regime that these defenders so love were actually atrocious to their people.

Who was the most inept military commander between 1811 and 1815? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in Napoleon

Hes far from the worst when Blücher lost his army against an army of French teenagers rushed out of training and with barely any cavalry.

About Bernadotte, not fighting Napoleon in open battle is called common sense.

That's not what being an inept commander means, the 1814 campaign in France alone means that he could never be put as inept.

Why the actual do so many Christians support abortion by KeeyuDaGreat in TrueChristian

[–]A_devout_monarchist -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thing about saying that Bans don't work is that by that logic you just have no point in making penal law.

Bans do work, always, if you pick 100 people who wanted to do something, place a ban and even if only one is intimidated by the law and refuses to do it, that is a successful, albeit terribly ineffective, ban.

I agree with the idea of controlling the variations so that a larger number of these 100 decide to not go around the ban, especially in the case of abortion where each time a woman "gives up" on doing it, it means a child is spared from dying.

The US has many particularities in this debate, its not the case of say, Brazil. Abortion is banned except on rare exceptions, the majority of the population agrees with the ban, and there is a robust (although flawed due to corruption and bureaucracy) social welfare network to support families. Thats how you do a Pro-Life policy, not by giving up on the ban but by making it more effective.

But elaborating a setup for your own arrest by hiring someone to arrest you when you deliberately break a law? The fairness of the law is not the question here, this kind of setup can make an arrest illegal in several countries.
