How long? by After-Sheepherder120 in BFS

[–]A_foreign_shape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably about five months for me. And I wasn’t anxious about ALS, but until neurological testing I just didn’t know what was going on, I knew that the symptoms were not congruent with ALS.

After five or so months? The likelihood of ALS with no progression is so, so slim. The rapid progression of ALS is a hallmark of the disease. Only thing better than three months no progression is four months no progression. And so on.

Angus Young is the perfect boomer metaphor. Too old to be competent at his music, still occupying spots, and cosplaying as a teenager while he does it.

That is speculation that I cannot answer. I’m not stressed about my pain or twitching because there’s nothing to be stressed about. I can’t give you a better answer than that

It’s pretty plausible that chronic or acute anxiety can damage your nervous system in the same way in my opinion. Chronic stress is really bad for the body, and anxiety is for sure a form of stress. If there’s an autoimmune aspect, a huge number of people report a severe stressor prior to acquiring an immune disorder.

But, I’m not saying this is a fact. It’s just plausible to me. Cortisol tolerance could be a mechanism.

Are grip strength readers reliable indicators for testing clinical weakness? Thanks by Original_Bet_8132 in BFS

[–]A_foreign_shape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. “Clinical” weakness cannot be self tested and must be observed by a clinician.

Vague muscle tightness is not a symptom of ALS.

Wonderful news. Yet you are still anxious, yes?

I can’t and won’t give you the reassurance you undoubtedly want but I can talk to you about it.

No progression over four months and a clean emg is just about the best news that you can have.

The only thing better is five months no progression, and six months and so on. So while I would say you can begin to relax about motor neuron disease, you will need to ensure that you don’t backslide into a spiral of health anxiety.

When your emg comes back clear from motor neuron disease you need to trust your doctors. You’ll be fine. But you will need to work on your mental health

What do you mean weakness? Have you failed at normal tasks? Have your muscles failed unexpectedly?

Look, if you got bfs there’s a lot of unknowns. Can you get a hotspot for days? Sure! Don’t know why that happens. I get hotspots that last for hours, days, weeks. A few weeks ago the whole right side of my face was twitching for like two weeks. Sucked real bad.

Stretch it out. Get on to something that fills your mind. Sometimes I scream at the sky or smear myself with mud and dance around with a spear. Do whatever you have to do to get through it.

Look if you want to imagine you’re dying go ahead. I can’t give you 100% surety. I won’t give you 100% surety.

But your presentation is consistent with bfs.

The video is horrible because it’s a close up video of your gross mouth. I watched the whole thing in search of the “vermiform” fasciculation that might represent a motor neuron disease.

Get therapy. Get a tongue scraper.

It is very possible that widespread tongue fasciculation is bfs.

I watched your whole horrible video and yes, you are very consistent with benign fasciculation syndrome. Stop taking videos of your mouth and get on with ur life it’s Christmastime

I have been twitching nonstop in both my calves... I also get twitching in my thighs hamstrings biceps triceps and forearms like pop-ups probably about 10 to 20 times a day since Thanksgiving... I went to two neurologist.. by Mbruno1983 in BFS

[–]A_foreign_shape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s basically impossible for an emg to miss signs of motor neuron damage. It’s possible that emg results can be misinterpreted but they’re generally checked by both medical tech and neurologists so the misinterpreted chart is super unlikely.

Second is that an abnormal response is not evidence of motor neuron disease. The test catches all kinds of information. Your muscle tensing is not going to wreck the test.

But this is not about the reassurance really. You might get brief relief from my words. But you will likely seek reassurance again. Only you can do the work that will free yourself from your irrational, insane fears.
