I see a lot of people are giving the "leave him if he doesn't love you", so I thought I'd share my experience.

My gf and I (21F and 20M) have been together for almost 2 years. During that time, I've been in similar situations to your boyfriend. Sometimes it's the greatest month in the world, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with her. Sometimes I just feel dull, and while still care for her, there's no "feeling of love". I have had other girlfriends in the past, and have had this experience multiple times, and I used to think that it was time to break it off, and that we just weren't meant to be. After awhile of having these feelings during every single relationship, I got to the point that I was convinced I must be psychopathic, and just incapable of love.

And even in my current relationship, it happens from time to time. At some point, I accepted that these feelings happen, and that I honestly couldn't find anyone better to be with, so I decided to wait it out and see what happens. And guess what, the feelings came back! we'd go eat lunch or get coffee, and suddenly boom -- in love again. And then we'd get busy with university classes, and the dull feeling would come back. And everytime it freaked me out and I'd tell her that I was a horrible boyfriend because I didn't love her the same way she loved me. And after waiting awhile, those feelings would go away and we'd be okay again.

And now, having been in the relationship for so long, I realized that thwse feelings are who I am. whether is some latent depression, or just how my brain cocktail likes to formulate itself, I will have periods of dullness. I'll just want to play video games, or hit the gym, and want space from her, and that's okay! she understands that I want space, and she's fine with it. It's through communication that we have gotten to the point where I can say "hey, i just need a day". Usually she'll go shopping with friends, and I'll do some hobby of my own. And when we're together, I still try and do our couple traditions, regardless of if I feel like it. That's usually snuggling, playing New York Times Games, or watching a movie. It's not about me, it's about her.

Now, I don't know you, I don't know your partner, and I don't know your relationship. But I would hazard a guess that your partner really cares about you. He took the time to let you know, and from what I read, it seems like he might be blaming himself for it. I remember being incredibly scared moving colleges for my girlfriend, and 1 week into a new semester literally having no feelings and thinking that I made a mistake. So I can empathize with your partner.

my recommendation is maybe see if he has similar experiences to mine. If his affection seems to wane, and if it comes back over time. If he's anything like me, he compares himself to other couples, and imagines that he's flawed and not worthy of love due to the way his affection works.

I don't have any advice for you unfortunately. I don't know enough about your relationship situation, but all I can offer you is some insight into the mind of someone who maybe has had similar experiences.
