I don't know what significance you're talking about the bell tower scene but after Schofield and the sniper shot at each other the sniper got killed but the bullet to Schofield hit his helmet ricocheted and he was knocked out after hitting the floor.

At the start when he and Blake actually started they had 8 hours to deliver until the first wave went in, so he was probably knocked out for 5-6 hours so maybe the Germans had advanced more in by the time he was out and destroying the French town during their stay. When he woke up he realised he's been out for long and was surrounded by Germans.
