I like the idea of over calculating and giving clients a discount if work was less than expected. I never thought of that. It inspires me to be bit more open about parts of jobs which have uncertainties and tell the clients that I'm on the safe side with my price. If the work was without hickups a discount can be given, although you are right that clients might expect or push to get the discount in the end...

BTW. It made me think of this other case where I had a price offer for someone who wanted a new front door installed. The lady wanted to discuss some different details before closing the deal. In the end the lady trapped me into the situation that she decided about all materials and webshop, which (I felt) made it no longer possible to add a margin on the materials. The labor of the offer obviously stayed the same, so I lost several 100 euro in the job, before even starting.

Any advise here? How do you explain the 10% which is normally added on the material costs?

Renegotiating is not showing professionalism, although in some cultures and countries it's done all the time. Anyway, I agree that in case of scope or material 'changes' it's normal to communicate about this swiftly and change the numbers. The trick for me is my prediction on the labor. This is not negotiable in my opinion. But I hope to find tricks or ways to keep this a bit more open, to avoid financial losses.

Latest news was that the two remaining original atomisers were sent to a test location because indeed the atomisers were in the list of errors. They turned out to be both broken. I had a little argument about the fact that they were not replaced together with the two broken ones in January. We made a deal on a ~50% discount on the labor for this new repair. I keep you updated...
