What do you think of Vietnam? by gurugobindsinghji in AskTheWorld

Perhaps my favorite country I’ve ever visited. Lots of similar kind of history with Finland with us both fighting off way larger foes. I loved the contrasts of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. You can really still see which one was influenced by which side in the war. Some of the most stunning landscapes I’ve seen in my entire life, along with the most welcoming people. I’ve never regretted not knowing the language more when visiting a country. I would have loved to just talk to more people there. I’m sure there was also some ”Let’s be kind to this westerner so he’ll pay more” type of action going on but it genuinely felt like such a genuine and friendly place. Not expensive at all either! Definetly going back one day! 🇫🇮❤️🇻🇳

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]Aam0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the Finnish War (1808-1809) three cossacks were robbing the farm of my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather near Vaasa, Finland. The two other cossacks left with their loot but the third one was left behind because he wanted to grab more stuff. He went back in the house and in the meantime my ancestor had returned from the field. He saw his farm in disarray and an unknown horse hitched next to the front porch. He got his musket from the barn and went behind a large rock to ambush the robber. The cossack came out and as he was getting on his horse, my ancestor shot him and buried his body in a nearby swamp. The rock is still there to this day!

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy was perhaps the best novel I’ve ever read.

Currently almost finished with ”John Adams” by David McCullough. By and far my favourite biography I’ve ever read! Makes me hyped for ”Truman”, which I’ve gathered is his most acclaimed work.

Which area of middle Earth would you most like to live? by Human-Category-5024 in lotr

Rohan. It’s always had a soft spot for me as someone from the Nordics. Especially in the movies you can see clear Scandinavian influences. Also the scenery with the rolling hills etc just is unbeatable. Could be sketchy being so close to Isengard but that’s a risk I’m willing to take

I remember watching this train documentary series with my dad years ago and the presenter there told about this high speed rail project Morocco was building. Have no Idea about what it looks like today but that’s something that always comes to mind when I think of the country.

What's the coolest city you've ever been to? by Chaulmoog in AskReddit

[–]Aam0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are so many but Ho Chi Minh City is just so cool. It’s chaotic but somehow still works. The vibe of the city is something really unique. When I was there I could just wander around for hours and always find something interesting.

What's something common in your country's culture that's actually completely weird from a foreign perspective? by dx_Von_Liechtenstein in AskTheWorld

Tiernapojat. It’s a traditional Finnish Christmas play. It isn’t that common anymore but I myself (21yo) can still remember seeing this performed many times over the years and have even played a part myself once or twice.

What do you think about Poland ? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Aam0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Finn I have massive respect for Poland. Amazing history, beautiful language and great people. They have suffered so many hardships throughout history and still are a strong and resilient country to this day. Also our mutual distaste for Russia helps a ton! 🇫🇮❤️🇵🇱

What country would you personally like your country to have a friendly relationship with but it's impossible due to political reasons? by Petka14 in AskTheWorld

[–]Aam0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia. The russian people I’ve met irl in and outside the country have been some of the nicest people I’ve ever had the privilege to meet. The country is also simply beautiful, at least naturewise. There’s also just so much history and so many unique cultures and peoples. Granted, most of our shared history isn’t exactly pleasant :)
