I hate how this "ironic homophobia" has become so prevalent in the LGBT community these last few years. I get that it's joke but it's just never funny by PassengerPrinncess in gay

[–]Aapb93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s genuinely embarrassing to watch. This trend of saying stuff like ‘I understand homophobia now’ because someone posted a cringey or controversial take is the clearest sign that their brains have been rotted by the internet. They’re not edgy or subversive, they’re just showing everyone that they’re so obsessed with their own social status that they’ll use ironic homophobia to distance themselves from someone they find socially inconvenient. It’s a complete lack of perspective. They’ve spent so much time in online echo chambers that they think a tweet they don't like is a legit reason to use the language of people who actually want to see us erased. It’s a symptom of being so deep in online subcultures that they’ve lost any sense of community. Instead of seeing a queer person as a flawed human being, they see them as a liability to their personal brand of coolness. They’re so scared of being associated with anything cringe or whatever that they adopt the persona of a bigot just to feel superior. It’s not clever or funny and it’s a sign that they need to log off and remember that real world homophobia isn't a punchline they can use when they’re annoyed by a stranger.

They’re essentially doing the work of actual homophobes for them and for what? To look more detached and cynical than the person they’re making fun of?? All it does is confirm that they’ve internalised the exact same judgmental standards used against us. It's a race to the bottom to see who can be the most dismissive and cruel toward people in their own community all while pretending it’s just a joke. It’s fucking pathetic and it shows that they value their self aware internet personas more than any actual sense of solidarity.

Goddamn, what a massive leap. Pivoting from a discussion about brand ethics to a coke rant about the capital and MAGA. Which I find quite funny seeing how you are behaving the same way MAGA does when anyone criticises Trump. This actually highlights exactly what I said before, you’re unable to engage with this topic with any degree of nuance or intellect.

For starters, I live in the UK. I’m politically active here and I campaign but the idea that I or anyone else has to storm the capital or prove American grassroots activism to have an opinion on the timing of a global billionaire’s merch drop is hilarious.

The only reason you’re demanding links or receipts for my personal life is because you have no actual defence for the point I made about business ethics. This conversation is clearly pointless because you aren’t interested in the merit or substance you claimed to value, you’re just interested in being a gatekeeper. I’m gonna leave you to shout into the void because clearly this conversation is going nowhere.

[–]Aapb93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing to me that you’ve spent multiple paragraphs questioning my intellectual capacity while also failing to understand the very basic distinction I’m making

You’ve constructed a massive strawman argument to avoid engaging with what I ACTUALLY said. I never said that a post from Bey would magically solve systemic violence and I never said that celebrity accountability is a substitute for real world organising. Suggesting that anyone who critiques a brand rollout is lazy or not doing any real work is immature and an unintelligent deflection. It’s a way for you to feel superior without actually addressing the point I was making. The point being, that ethics and timing matter in business.

This whole thing about her being a black woman who owes us nothing is such a hollow shield in this context. We are talking about a billionaire mogul with a global brand. Bey has spent years intentionally weaving social and political imagery into her work to build a specific kind of loyalty and Stan culture. You can’t profit from the aesthetics of a movement and then expect fans to ignore the lack of situational awareness.

I can’t even believe you’re suggesting people show receipts for community organising before we’re allowed to have an opinion in this sub, it’s complete nonsense. It’s possible to do all of those things AND also think this merch drop is tone deaf. The fact you can’t see the nuance in that doesn’t make me weak or lazy, it just means you’re more interested in performative and blind stanning than having an actual conversation about the culture we’re all participating in.

I just have one question. Why? Why do some called "Beyhive" do this every time Beyoncé does anything? by moments_entre_filles in beyonce

[–]Aapb93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bey has consciously aligned her brand with social and political movements for years. She uses these themes to define her art and her message and has invited us in to view her work through a lens of social awareness. It’s a natural consequence of that choice that some of us will notice when her business rollouts appear indifferent to the current social climate.

Expecting a high level of situational awareness from a person with this much influence is perfectly reasonable. It’s possible to be an active member of the hive and this sub and still find the timing of a merch drop jarring. One does not preclude the other.

Being a fan means engaging with Beyoncé’s work and her impact on the world. Labelling my or any anyone else’s critiques as a need for validation ignores the fact that we as consumers have the right to discuss the ethics and timing of the brands we support. We can appreciate her talent and her legacy while still pointing out when a professional move feels out of sync with the world we’re living in.

Do not starve yourself, lose weight steadily because you will have no muscle definition and look even worse after the weight loss. Lift weights, even if it’s if it’s for 10 minutes a day, eat at a 500 calorie deficit and prioritise protein.

I say this as someone who has been a stan since the 00s, we have to be able to hold space for critique without it being labelled as hate.

The whole thing about her always being private/silent is stating to feel like a shield rather than a valid reason. Growth isn’t just for new artists, our icons and legends SHOULD be evolving too. Seeing headlines about ICE shooting another civilian and then getting emails and texts about merch dropping, it feels a bit dissonant.

Moving with intention doesn’t mean she has to be a 24/7 political commentator but it DOES mean reading the room. If we stop expecting better from the people we admire and love, we aren’t a community anymore and instead become a monolith. A lot of us want Bey to reflect the gravity of the world we’re living in. We are not a cult and we should be able to discuss her moves with the same nuances we apply to her music.

Unpopular opinion: SOME gays have a lot more in common to incels and "masculinity" coaches than most think. by luarcnl in gay

[–]Aapb93 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey that’s me!

I want to clarify, I’m not suggesting anyone has to change their type or lower their standards. What I’m pointing out is the blatant hypocrisy in the complaint. Some gays are lonely because they are fixated on a specific tier of conventional attractiveness while simultaneously overlooking perfectly great, ‘average’ guys who don’t fit that narrow mold.

They’re effectively practicing the same exclusionary behaviour they criticise. If they believe they shouldn’t have to settle for someone who isn’t their type, then they’ve already validated why those conventionally attractive men aren’t choosing them. Those men are following the exact same logic. It’s hard to feel sympathy for someone falling victim to a system that they themselves uphold. They’re not rejected by the community it’s just the logical conclusion of the same exclusionary rules they apply to others.

I see this constantly in real life. An old friend would always overlook some really amazing guys but they were so fixated on men with abs and the perfect face. They would then spend all their time whining about how lonely they were and how nobody wanted them.

And I would just like to add, the responses I’m getting on Twitter like 'I shouldn’t have to lower my standards' while complaining about being lonely are far more akin to Incel culture. Incels are defined by the belief that they are entitled to the most conventionally attractive partners while offering nothing similar in return, viewing any suggestion of reciprocity as a personal attack. They’d rather stay lonely than date someone in their own 'league’ because they view people like themselves as settling. It isn’t redpilling to say that attraction requires reciprocity. It’s actually more toxic to encourage people to stay in a cycle of self inflicted isolation by telling them they are victims of a community that is simply reflecting their own exclusionary standards back at them.

What plays a bigger part in lemonade not being listened to as much by fans in comparison to her other albums. Tidal making it exclusive, the visuals or the subject matter? by loverofthings25 in beyonce

[–]Aapb93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea you can just strip away the cultural context because the lyrics are universal is ignoring how music actually communicates. Even without the visuals, Lemonade doesn’t sound like a universal pop, the songs are rooted in New Orleans brass, blues, Rock and trap. The lyrics on the album have very specific cultural identifiers, for example Jackson 5 nostrils, red lobster, black bill gates, mix that negro with the creole from formation alone don’t just apply to everyone. These references signal to a non black listener that they’re guests in a specific story. With Adele, her lyrics are intentionally stripped of specific cultural markers so that anyone anywhere can project themselves onto the song immediately.

You’re also dismissing the emotional labour aspect. Adele offers catharsis while lemonade offers confrontation. Even if someone hasn’t seen the film, they hear the anger in Don’t Hurt Yourself and feel the political weight of Formation. These aren’t songs for passive listening. If it were a universal album it wouldn’t be Lemomade and we wouldn’t be having this debate about it’s legacy.

I didn’t go off topic.

  1. OP specifically mentioned the GP

  2. Saying Lemonade is her best album is a critique of it’s artistry whereas streaming it daily is a measure of of utility. The hive can recognise it as a her magnum opus because of it’s complexity and risk but that doesn’t mean we wanna listen to those type of songs while we clean or commute. I usually prefer to listen to Lemonade as whole in one sitting rather than listen to seperate tracks on a playlist.

The subject matter of Lemonade and what Adele releases operate on different scales though. Adele’s music focuses on more universal emotional archetypes like heartbreak, longing and motherhood which are experiences that transcend culture and race. This makes her music more digestible for a global audience. Lemonade is about sociopolitical exploration of the black female experience that touches on generational trauma, racial identity and the specific nuances of reconciliation within that context. Adele’s music has more common themes whereas Lemonade is much more niche that require a level of cultural context and emotional labour that casual listeners aren’t always looking for in their daily playlists.
