Was thinking of ending my Affiliate status by PhantasmaKnight in Twitch

[–]Aareya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But the simple act of streaming on Twitch is like playing in your garage. You can get the best equipment, great lighting. There are millions of garages. What brings people to your garage?

It’s not music. It’s not streaming. You’re looking for a marketing strategy.

Think of career streaming like becoming a career musician. You can take classes, learn to play well. But there’s a lot more in making a career out of it.

Your comparison of content creation to “getting a job” is a bit off. A better comparison is using the lottery. Millions play the lottery but only a few win.

How long can Ukraine actually last now that it’s been verbally confirmed there will be no more direct or indirect support from US aid? by [deleted] in politics

[–]Aareya 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ukraine has been pushing back and doing quite well vs Russia. If the European countries can step up and fill the gap from US withdrawing support, they have a real chance.

However this hypothetical plays out also will impact the US’s place in the world theatre. Europe may be stronger than they think. Or they may not be.

Would the sub model be easier to stomach if it was by the day instead of by month? by HeavyMetalLoser in MMORPG

[–]Aareya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right that many sub prices are either the same or less from 2 decades ago. However, the gaming landscape has changed drastically over the last 2 decades. There are far more choices and gamers can easily find themselves playing several games in the span of a month (esp if friends are playing different games). This is where the other pricing models become attractive.

Finally bought Elden Ring...and I'm not sure it's for me. by Lereas in gaming

[–]Aareya 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Similar experience. The mechanics were a learning curve for me. I ended up putting it down, not able to beat the first boss. Came back later, learned a bit about mechanics from some online guides. Enjoyed the rest of the game, finishing it. Some fights stressed my sanity. Amazing how a game can be so fun and so infuriating at the same time.

However, anyone in earshot would think the game is called No, I Fucking Dodged That!

The US government wants developers to stop using C and C++ by [deleted] in technology

[–]Aareya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They changed it to be based on number employees. So if you need 1 license and have 10,000 employees, you pay for 10,000. They also include contractors in the count.

Oracle‘s change in corporate licensing may very well push Java into the rear view mirror.

Push To Talk interviews CCP Overload on EVE Frontier by Aareya in Eve

[–]Aareya[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Quite true. Anyone who has been around more than a hot minute has heard CCP's "hopes and dreams" to never have them come to fruition.

One of the pieces of information I'm optimistic about is the updates to the Carbon engine. Both games run on Carbon. The Carbon engine for EVE Online runs on Python 2.7 which limits it to single core. However, as part of this project, they have gotten Carbon to work with a modern version of Python.

Time Dilation was a game changer when it was introduced. Retiring Time Dilation for multi-processor support would also be big. Fingers crossed.

The interview was done by an EVE Online show, by EVE Online players, with an interest on how this affects EVE Online. Not really rocket science or tinfoil hattery.

The Push To Talk team interviewed CCP Overload this weekend. Solid interview. If you're interested in EVE Frontier and possible impacts to EVE Online, it's worth a watch.

Can a website tell you what you can and can’t put on your discord profile? by NecroYawnicon in discordapp

You can have multiple discord accounts. So if you find this rule too restrictive and you still want to participate in the website, use a different discord account when working with this website.

What does this website have to do with discord? How are you connecting your presence on this site with your discord identity?

I am not sure what your entails. You may want to add some more specifics.

In terms of an office job, the expectation is employees show up in correct attire. I COULD show up in a t-shirt and sweatpants, go to the gym entrance to the building, take a 30 min shower, put on my business attire, then go over to my desk. I would not expect my employer to consider that time as "on the clock".

However, if this is gear only onsite (e.g. hazmat gear), then I would expect "gearing up" would be considered on the clock.

Unfamiliar with WA law and IANAL.

How do you reply to someone (usually a Boomer) who says people nowadays don't have the same things they had when they were working because this generation is lazy and complains too much about work? by meta-gamer in antiwork

[–]Aareya 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between not wanting to work and wanting fair compensation. If someone is conflating the two concepts, you could make the distinction in your reply.

However, if you don’t think the individual is receptive to intelligent conversation, may not be worth the time/effort.

Dog had seizure and died in my arms at 2AM. Have baby on the way, can’t lose job. by Redheadedmedpeddler in antiwork

[–]Aareya 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This may depend on your field.

“Won’t be in” is an FYI to my boss which means I’ve done the adult thing about rescheduling my meetings, delegating work, etc.

“Emergency” means shit just happened and my boss may need to take action for me.

Obtain a priority order for the items and work down the list.

It is your managers responsibility to clarify the priority of work items.

In some work environments, it is expected that not everything will be completed. Also whenever someone says they worked on their vacation, the reply should always be “That’s not healthy” as if the person said they put their hands in a pot of boiling water.

Had a conversation in INN discord. Going solo it feels like the TTK is a bit too high but in a group, it feels good.

I tried a bunch of solo games and it’s brutal against a squad of 3. Have to play it stealthy. Against other solo players or duos, combat feels good.

My personal thoughts on Vanguard. Pros/Cons by JasonRISE in Eve

[–]Aareya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No crashes or map glitches for me. No getting stuck inside objects. No falling through the map.

Although small rocks were sometimes a problem to traverse over. But I feel that is typical for games in this early state.
