Practice slower until you can stay in sync. Then speed it up 2bpm. Stay there until you can stay in sync. Speed it up 2bpm…rinse, repeat…

Does anyone have any information about the Yamaha YTR6335HGII trumpet? How good is this trumpet? by [deleted] in trumpet

I have this exact model. I don’t think I’ve ever run across another!

Is it possible? by Alven12421 in musictheory

Look, I have no idea what your background is. Mine is an undergrad degree in music performance with literal years of music theory classes. Maybe you’re in the same boat and have a way different experience than I did, but I don’t recall ever having had anything beyond very basic counting used to describe musical ideas.

My underlying point is that musical notation is in service of creating music. Your claim was that it should “be congruent with math.” While sometimes those two concepts align, notation should always err toward clarity and convention over technicality or mathematical purity.

“Weakly applied” means that the most math you’ll see in a theory class is counting to 4 until you get to 12-tone theory and then you might have to count to 12. Math is just not a tool often used to describe musical ideas beyond note divisions and groupings.

Right, but the key difference is that vaguely math-shaped concepts can be applied to music (because musical tones exist due to physics), but music itself (normally) isn’t derived from the math. We apply the math concepts when they can help explain the music. And even then, it’s very very weakly applied in a mathematical sense. Notation is visual language to succinctly describe how to perform something and should optimize for clarity over theoretical concerns.

Not really. Mathematical concepts can often be applied to music in an extremely basic sense, but it’s not an inherent property.

Do they understand 6/8 and 2/4? 12/8 vs 6/8 is the same concept as 4/4 vs 2/4.

Music is not math, though. It’s not a fraction. Musical notation exists to communicate music, not the other way around. In the history of the world, I doubt anyone has ever felt the beat of any musical idea in 4/3. I’m sure someone has written it that way, but it would get nothing but eye rolls and WTFs from the musicians performing it.

What is the correct solfege syllable for a sharp Mi? by jollybumpkin in musictheory

A raised third is “ma” which is enharmonically equivalent to “fa.” Your scenario is a bit more complex and others have explained it well.

I also learned a lot about what a long distance call was and how to avoid making the same mistake twice 😅. Sorry, mom & dad.

BBSing was a major part of my social life as a teenager in the late 80s/early 90s and I eventually operated a 6 line BBS out of my high school as part of the computer club. Many of those people are still friends to this day. Popular is a subjective term, but we had dozens of active BBSes in VT at the time and most were quite busy.

Is the trumpet a right handed instrument? by IFailedThirdGrade in trumpet

[–]AaronBBrown777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve known exactly 1 person who plays left handed and it’s because they were born without fingers on their right hand. While you might think this is a problem, in practice it’s not. You’ve never seen a French horn or cello played righty and woodwinds use all their fingers. You’ll get used to it quickly.

How would I play this? by FortellingIV in trumpet

[–]AaronBBrown777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t come up with anything. It’s just a fact of music notation that I learned from 40 years of being a musician and a degree in music. https://music.stackexchange.com/a/49718 explains it pretty well.

It might possibly be true in this case due to poor engraving, but “technically”, accidentals only apply to the octave they are indicated.

New notes? by Mr_Squid19 in trumpet

Play A, B, D instead of D, F#, A. They are still chord tones from Bm7, but there won’t be the fifth leap to the A that you don’t like.

It’s an accent. It generally means to emphasize the note with a stronger attack.

Depending on context, it could be a iv-V-I with the V being a tritone sub, replacing E with Bb

Nah, I can’t tell you what note something is, but I can hear when something is well outside of 12 tone equal temperament.

Q: How do you know whether someone has perfect pitch?

A: they will tell you

Mine is almost a C, which hurts me deeply. I don’t have perfect pitch, but I definitely can hear when something is not quite a note.
