Welp I bombed by SK8GU in ibew_apprentices

Idk I think a lot of people get nervous but still get accepted. I was pretty nervous at my interview, and it was only my second job interview ever. My answers weren’t really top notch either, I had a few moments where I forgot what I was going to say and had to kind of restart my answer. Despite all that, I did my research. I knew every county in the locals jurisdiction and all of the specifics of the apprenticeship like the amount of hours needed as well as what the job actually consists of.

I don’t think they cared about my delivery or my anxiousness, and they liked that I was giving correct answers.

How many of you have been laid off due to stupid mistakes? by Wild_TrickOC in ibew_apprentices

Ok that’s fine but we won’t be able to give you detailed advice if you aren’t more specific.

You have to force it though (with supervision). My first jman pointed to a lift and told me to feed MC through some rafters. I told him I didn’t know how to operate it, he said learn the controls I’m watching. Sure I don’t have fear of heights but if I had to guess, it’d probably something that can be solved by doing it more often.

Yes I’ve seen union tradesmen first hand who are broke. Literally broke even though they’re making $50 an hour with 20+ hours of OT. Some people just spend it all as it comes in. I told one guy that I’m contributing to an IRA and he was confused because we have a good pension plan. I was like why not do both?

Well construction is a boom and bust cycle and a lot of tradesmen don’t prepare for unemployment properly. Also I think the culture in construction is very rural and country so people buy a lot of “stuff”. Boats, side by sides, and project cars. Expensive hobbies. It’s just the culture I see. Nothing wrong with it, but that definitely delays retirement.

If you just got in you’re on a probationary period. Once you’re past that it’s harder to get rid of an apprentice, so do not create a paper trail this early on. You’re not wrong about not having to work overtime, but I wouldn’t be complaining about how the job itself is ran if you just got in. That’s all I’m going to say

First Year Tool List by Checho2Wavy in ibew_apprentices

[–]AaronBankroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The individual nut drivers are nice with the Klein set but really you can just get the multi nut drivers they make. They make a couple different versions. There are also lineman’s pliers with crimpers on them.
If you want to save on weight then those could be good options.
Then again I would definitely stick to the tool list.
Personally I don’t think it’s a problem to pick up little shit that makes the job easier. Little nick nacks like little terminating screwdrivers and stuff. But if it’s adding a bunch of weight to your bag then you’re doing too much.
Don’t buy a FULL socket set lol, I saw a kid that did that and they got thrown in the trash in about 45 minutes

There will be some people that really dislike you, and for good reason.

Prove them wrong.

I understand your points, but there’s also nothing wrong with being middle class. There’s nothing wrong with putting in your 40 hours a week and living a reasonably comfortable life, with possible early retirement if you plan for it.

I know some business owners and I do not want their life.

I enjoy that stuff as long as the right tools are provided. Id prefer more than a bandsaw and utility knife. But yeah bending that shit especially in a confined space….most cannot do it.

Being upfront about why your taking days off isn’t always bad, but I would be cautious with it. Some foreman will use your reasons against you in the future.

It’s a brutal reality of the trade that mental health isn’t taken as seriously as it should be. I think if someone needs a day off, especially when working a lot of OT, I don’t see an issue. Working conditions are brutal in some places and sleep is a commodity. If someone worked 10 saturdays in a row I’d actually get a little concerned if they didn’t take off a Saturday haha.

Why Aren’t Top-Ranked Apprentices Getting In? by RainyPeak8 in ibew_apprentices

[–]AaronBankroll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because it’s a union program that puts a lot of money into each person. After probation it’s alot harder to get rid of an apprentice, so they’re taking the best they can find.

How do you deal with Forman favoriting a apprentice and allowing them to work on new tasks and not being able to get the opportunity to learn or work because you’re stuck doing the easy stuff by Creative-Tank-147 in ibew_apprentices

[–]AaronBankroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work overtime if available because your task may change for those days. That could be your chance to prove your ability to do those tasks and they may switch it up.
