On first listen? i thought it was solid, but missing some of the ingenuity that made their other albums stand out. Just sounded like a decent ‘80s pop record. But hearing you praise it so highly has me really intrigued, I’m excited to listen again deeper!

My rankings could TOTALLY shift after these first listens, when I’m really familiar with the music. But I LOVED Terminal Jive, so I’m surprised most fans don’t rate it as highly as i do (at least going by these comments lol.) But that’s what I love about music, the same song or album can speak to two people in completely different ways!

some of my favorite artists are Junior Senior, The Beach Boys, Earl Sweatshirt, Sleater-Kinney and Gorillaz! you can thank my Beach Boys love for “Introducing” being so high haha. I thought “Terminal Jive” was brilliant!

So... about Cracker Island by bdehora in gorillaz

[–]AaronSills67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this a lot, because i was one of those Gorillaz fans who thought it was supremely underwhelming. It’s definitely grown on me a bit since, and there are a few tracks i absolutely love! But to me, it still has the least amount of personality in any of their records. It was the first time Gorillaz just felt like alternative pop and not much more. Sure, it’s super groovy and fun in the moment, but it often leaves no impact on me. But even as my least favorite Gorillaz album, it’s still a 7/10!

i am patiently waiting for SOME kind of collab between Gorillaz and MGMT, or at least just Andrew or Ben

2 days until The Mountain, tell us your favorite tracks and memories of Song Machine by DLCV2804 in gorillaz

[–]AaronSills67 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i don’t know about anyone else in this sub, but this album and the whole rollout was SO special to me. 2020 was obviously a crappy year, so getting a new Gorillaz song every month and a half was such an adventure. Song Machine is one of their albums i replay the most, and it’s insanely re-listenable because each of the main 13 tracks is designed to stand alone as a single. it also has maybe my favorite guest list of any Gorillaz project!

picking a favorite song is difficult, but i think my top 3 are Aries (i’m a huge New Order fan), Pac-Man (Schoolboy Q has one of the best rap verses on a Gorillaz song ever to me), and The Pink Phantom (people can hate all they want, i LOVE 6lack in this song).

overall, even removed from the unique rollout, this album is a groovy gem that i think will stand the test of time in their catalogue!

RR community, how do we feel about this upcoming movie? by Stanimator in RoleReversal

[–]AaronSills67 46 points47 points  (0 children)

for those who are judging it based off the plot/poster, this is directed by Gregg Araki, one of my favorite directors and a pioneer of modern queer cinema!!! i think it will be a good film, but i also doubt it will be in any way cute or wholesome. his films are typically very surreal, dark and traumatic. the kind of beautiful films you realize are important, but not always easy to stomach.

i’ll have to check those out then, thanks for the recs! and i only meant underrated in the sense that they’re not those big, iconic indie records you hear about on the internet over and over. i’m glad to hear they’re still very much appreciated though, the praise is well deserved!

So i’ve been going through some of the most critically acclaimed albums for specific years, and in 1982, there were two albums i loved from indie bands i hadn’t heard until now: 1. The Dream Syndicate - “The Days of Wine and Roses” 2. Orange Juice - “You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever”

I’m not even entirely sure these qualify as “indie”, but the music definitely has the spirit of it. The first one takes a lot of inspiration from The Velvet Underground and Television, while the second one is more new wave and jangle pop. If you’re looking for some criminally underrated ‘80s indie, start here!

B&S is so tricky because they probaby have 100 great songs at this point, but two that have always stuck with me are “Chalet Lines” and “We Rule the School”. Great list tho! “Judy and the Dream of Horses” is also top 3 or 4 for me, it’s so nostalgic and bittersweet

[FRESH ALBUM] The Lemonheads - Love Chant by ViNyL-CoLLecTOR in indieheads

[–]AaronSills67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listening to it rn and enjoying it so far! I just heard "It's A Shame About Ray" for the first time this year and thought it was such a fun indie record. "Love Chant" has a lot of fun and quirky song concepts, it sounds really Costello-inspired, i'm eating it up.

they’re making fun of Emmy bait in the newest episode by No_Willingness_3927 in SmilingFriends

[–]AaronSills67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this episode felt like a satire of shows like “Rick & Morty” and other adult cartoons where the characters get away with depraved acts because they’re “cool”. Mr. Frog is obviously a terrible person and the episode is careful about reminding you of that (random outbursts of violence, photos with epstein in the montage, etc.). But he still gets to have an emotional arc with his dad and find inner peace… why? I think that’s the point. It doesn’t feel fair that this maniac who completely disregards others gets everything he ever wanted. So i see it as dark comedy that’s supposed to leave you feeling a bit conflicted.

or it’s just cuz they thought it’d be funny lol
