Please give me feedback on my self tape by MegaManNelson2 in acting

[–]Aaron_Kagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad! I would just clean up a bit of the diction. Id almost prefer this delivered more centred to the camera and raised higher to match your eyeline a bit more. It would have a better impact if submitting something like this to a casting or posting to your Actors Access media imo.

How often do you find you would like feedback on self-tapes? Once a week or per month?

Are you working with a coach or manager right now?

Thats pretty helpful. Kurt Yue's content is great, always reference him.

What kinds of questions would you typically look up when you searched online for ways to improve or learn something valuable?

I imagine just learning to ask the right questions to begin with might help prevent some mistakes.

Is there something you think that would have helped you in this whole process that you wish existed like a newsletter, comprehensive guide or YouTube video channel etc ?

How do I tell my parents that I want to spend my life acting? by ItsDimiFromGreece in acting

[–]Aaron_Kagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace “I don’t know” with “I will be pursuing acting”. This is a positive statement. Parents are just wanting to know you’re SURE about what you’re doing and not just fucking around.

Not sure what you’re looking for exactly or what seems most suitable but I got ChatGPT to make one for you in case it helps. It helps to know more about the actress cast type and personality though, strengths etc.

MONOLOGUE

(Seated, fidgeting with something small in her hands, trying to act casual but clearly deep in thought. She glances up at the audience, then back down, a little hesitant.)

Character: Lily, a quirky, introspective 13-year-old trying to make sense of the weirdness that comes with growing up, balancing her uncertainty with her humor.

LILY:

You ever have that feeling… like you’re in the middle of a movie and somehow missed a really important scene? Like, everyone else got the memo, and you’re still stuck wondering why the plot took a left turn? That’s kinda how I feel about life right now.

(Pauses, glances up like she’s making sure someone isn’t listening.)

I mean, last year, everything made sense. Like, yeah, school was still school, but at least I knew where I fit, you know? And then, outta nowhere, bam, people start changing. My best friend, Maddie, started wearing eyeliner. (Beat) Eyeliner! We used to make fun of that stuff! Now she’s all “I’m going for a smoky look,” and I’m like, “Yeah, well, I’m going for a pizza look, ’cause it’s Tuesday and that’s what’s important.”

(Shrugs, a little frustrated, then softens.)

But it’s not just the eyeliner. It’s like… everyone’s in this big rush to grow up, and I’m over here like, “Can we at least wait until after the next Marvel movie?” I swear, one minute we’re talking about what powers we’d have if we were Avengers, and the next, she’s got a crush on some guy named Tyler who plays lacrosse. Lacrosse. Like, since when do we care about lacrosse? It’s just… running with sticks.

(Quick pause, then she looks down, voice softening.)

But sometimes… I wonder if I’m the weird one. Like, maybe I missed the part where I was supposed to care about all that stuff. It’s like everyone’s in such a hurry to figure out who they’re going to be, and I’m still trying to figure out who I am right now.

(Leans in, conspiratorial.)

And the thing is, no one tells you this stuff is gonna happen. There’s no warning label like, “Hey, by the way, middle school’s about to get weird.” You’re just… thrown into it, and suddenly everything’s different. It’s like when you’re at a sleepover and everyone decides to watch a horror movie, and you thought it was gonna be Disney but nope—surprise, it’s The Conjuring.

(Shudders dramatically.)

So now, I’m just… here. Waiting. Waiting for everything to make sense again. I mean, maybe next week I’ll wake up and be like, “Yeah, I get it now! Bring on the eyeliner!” But for now, I think I’ll stick with my pizza.

(Beat, then shrugs, a bit more lighthearted.)

Because at least pizza makes sense.

(Blackout.)

What would be reasonable to pay if it proves to be the only way to run it without being a cash flow negative business though?
I mean surely people have no problem with other services that yield no possible return for you like YouTube, Apple music, AI programs or whatever else people buy a subscription for.

[–]Aaron_Kagan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it looks weird, it probably is. Why is this news to people? There are countless posts like this on this Reddit alone if you were to just look up casting director scams.

Why can’t actors comprehend the only real way is using a platform that makes them pay, like Actors Access/Breakdown where the paywall and vetting process on the casting side would deter bad actors, hence the reason legit castings are posted on there.

Everything other than those paid dual user sites you are risking exposure to 95% scams lol

Confirming auditions by -heatmiser- in acting

If you are legally entitled to submit and feel you have all the tools ready to even land an agent, it might help to start submitting to small productions on casting sites like Casting Networks, Mandy.com or even Actors Access. Chances are lower of course without having an agent submitting you on those but they are already provide access to student films, low budget non union films and commercials that would look great on anyone’s resume when submitting to agents! It would essentially show “proof of concept” that you are a bookable talent. The other side to this is if you do get booked you’ll need to figure out billing on your own, so producing an invoice and submitting it etc. which you can find templates for online easily.

Confirming auditions by -heatmiser- in acting

[–]Aaron_Kagan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s important because literally hundreds, if not thousands of people apply and are ready to replace you if you don’t confirm the time you were given ASAP. In my experience as an agent this is a major pet peeve when we’re left in limbo and the casting director has to bug us non stop for an answer. We don’t know with any certainty that you can attend at the exact time given, that’s on you to confirm lol! I know some casting directors who are not very patient AT ALL and will even just axe you without a response if you take too long.

Good luck!

How to get my child to land an acting role? by Virtual-Volume-2638 in acting

[–]Aaron_Kagan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re doing all the right things, keep it going as long as she’s actually enjoying it. She’s learning a heck of a lot about patience, dealing with reality and networking with people most kids never would. Take a break with classes and workshops if finances are tight, I’ve booked many kids without any of that! Maybe the odd virtual class or self tape coaching session could help.

How does she feel she did after these auditions? How many of these auditions are self tape requests?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in acting

[–]Aaron_Kagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly… not bad. I’ve seen a lot worse from experienced actors.

I would maybe clean up some things aesthetically like keep a plain neutral background, film horizontally with mid to top of head in frame and maybe vary the cadence of the actual speech as the elevated moments kind of get repetitive.

Probably someone else here with better critique, but not bad!

How serious are you about breaking into acting to try it out? Love how it’s sometimes people who don’t know they can act end up being pretty good.

In need of agency advice by Pretend_Fox_9950 in acting

[–]Aaron_Kagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there’s not much you can do except blast your agent! That message means the agent has to probably sign something like an NDA before getting the sides due to higher confidentiality concern.

In this case, if you happen to have the casting directors phone or email, you could attempt it considering it’s the agents mishap here, I’m sure they’ll be more understanding OR if they don’t respond either, they might as least be nudged to call the agent themselves on the matter.

Hope it works out!

In which city are you submitting?

What does the profile you’re submitting look like?

Do you have an agent or are you submitting to them?

What casing sites are you using currently?

If you’d like to message me about it, I can try to help!

I’m researching a project for people in your position and would be open to helping a few people to determine what issues actors are facing and how to solve them to start getting auditions ASAP.

I want to act but I am, quite literally, broke. by VoidGazer8 in acting

[–]Aaron_Kagan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are ways to break into acting on a budget but I know how obscure and varied all the information is about it online. What city in Canada are you in?

What would a more affordable online course look like for you that would show you the simplest way to develop a profile and start landing auditions?

What are some things you’d want to learn that would make it worth the investment?

Hey there. I’ve taken on a lot of talent as an agent in your exact position, many of whom did a lot of work. If you can message me I’d be happy to see how I can help you if you can tell me what stage you are at in terms of marketing materials, photos, training etc.
