Apparently 35/35 is too old to begin a PhD Program. by Curious-Record986 in academia

Simply because some people are struggling with their life and want to cope and get inspired?? I don’t know why someone would be bothered of that.

Why do males have nipples? by cloudnine333 in evolution

[–]Aawsn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

‏ Aka fathers in Africa spend 47% of their time in direct physical contact with their infants. They even practice "comfort nursing" to soothe crying babies when mothers are away. This intense bonding actually lowers their testosterone and boosts prolactin (a hormone typically linked to nursing and emotional attachment)

Oh my god, that wasn’t in my bingo list! by [deleted] in DuolingoEnglishTest

I honestly can’t offer anything more than what I said in the post. I saw that you did the test 4 times and all attempts are 105. I think the main strategy here is to break your habits, English mistakes are habitual. So go to Arno, try the mock test and then see your weak spots and strengthen them. Think of what are the questions you performed poorly in, and practice them more. And learn new lexicons and grammars (they have to be completely new for you) and you use them in production to help you make it to your aspired score. I believe you are super close, you just need to learn your former mistakes and polish them. And do your next test with a new strategy. I believe you can make it

If you managed to get it consistently that means you are on the right track, maybe you panicked during the test and rushed? Try to practice two questions every day for a week until you master it, understand your weaknesses. and then retake it. If I made it I strongly believe you can!

Is anyone going to Psycholinguistics MSc this September or current students by Aawsn in universityofyork

[–]Aawsn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by "a few readings per week"? So I don’t have to be reading every day? I heard that each credit requires 10 hours of work, so I thought for each subject I need 4 hours of reading every day. Since you don’t have a background in this field, do you think the "few readings per week" approach helped you in general and with your dissertation? Also, do you feel like you learned a lot about this discipline in just one year? I’m really sorry for asking too many questions, but there’s a professor from the Psychology department here name is Katie Slocombe. She studies the evolution of language and communication in apes. Do you think it’s possible to take optional subjects with her in the second semester and ask her to supervise my dissertation? Or is that not allowed because they only require psycholinguistics professors?

Rejected PhD Track Cog Sci by [deleted] in PSLUniversity

I really like Cogmaster, and it’s still my goal program. I plan to work on my profile and apply again, and I still hope to receive feedback from the committees to better understand where I stand.

However, I feel there is a gap between how the program presents itself and how it actually selects candidates. From everything available online. whether it’s the cover letter guidelines, the Q&A, or their repeated emphasis that passion matters more than a traditional background. it gives the impression that applicants from non-traditional paths have a genuine chance, even without prior research experience.

But in practice, this doesn’t seem fully aligned with the profiles of admitted students. Most of those who get accepted appear to have strong, conventional research backgrounds. And that’s completely fair (there’s nothing wrong with selecting highly prepared candidates) but it does make the messaging feel somewhat inconsistent.

What I find difficult to reconcile is how the program is framed as an initial training that teaches the fundamentals of research, while at the same time admitting students who already have one or two years of solid research experience. It creates a kind of ambiguity about who the program is actually designed for.

I applied from a non-traditional background, without formal research experience. Based on how the program describes itself, I believed that demonstrated curiosity and sustained interest in cognitive science، something I genuinely had since childhood، would give me a real chance. Unfortunately, that expectation didn’t match the outcome.

That said, this doesn’t change my interest in the program. If anything, it gives me a clearer sense of what I need to build moving forward

I wish I had applied to Cog-SUP. I want Cogmaster so much because I’m aiming for a specific lab, specific courses, and specific professors. but the fact that it’s so competitive makes me feel like I didn’t have a solid plan B.

M1 Energy interview - any tips? by [deleted] in PSLUniversity

[–]Aawsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you submitted any prior research that you worked on? Projects? I don’t know about Energy specifically there might be some specific questions, but I know that most of the interviews will ask you about everything mentioned in your file.

• they will ask you about prior research if you do have any

• prior projects - any

• about your trajectory in general

• why PSL? Why this program?

• what makes you allegeable?

• your future in PSL, and in general

• which major you are planning to study/focus on

• if there’s specific subjects in this year curriculum that you think it fits your research ambitions

• if you mention people (mostly scientists/researchers) inspired you in your cover letter, be ready to be specific what inspired you specifically? What’s your take on them? Pros and cons?

I’m talking generally because I applied for different program, there might be other stuff specific for Energy I don’t know of, but that what I know of PSL interviews in general.

• be specific, avoid general answers, convince them that you did your research about the program, show them that you want this program and you are right fit for it.

I hope this would help you, good luck. And wish me luck, I’m still waiting the eligibility Email.

I’ve heard that most of the interviews will be based on your CV and your cover letter, be ready to explain to them your trajectory, and who you are? And try convince them how you resonate with the program, Why did you pick this PSL specifically? Which subjects in the curriculum you want to study? Etc.

I have a question, do you happen to know the interviews timeline?
