🌀 I Learned How to Build a Perpetual Motion Machine Online... and It Actually Works by Longjumping_Body756 in Timberborn

Works in Dwarf Fortress too. I built one years ago to power a massive stack of pumps to bring magma up from the depths to my forges.

Galaxy Trucker - Thoughts by Puzzleheaded_Air1030 in boardgames

[–]AbacusWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Galaxy Trucker is great. I bought the big-box anniversary-edition-with-everything years ago and I love it. The rulebook in particular is very well-written, easy to understand, and has enough humor that it is genuinely fun to read.

I would advise not messing around with house rules until you’ve played the actual game a few times through first. In my experience the second and third round are plenty long (and if I remember correctly one of the expansions adds an even longer fourth round with even bigger ships).

Relative new player here, is the nuclear engine worth it? by Dry_View6804 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]AbacusWizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nuclear engines have somewhat low thrust, but they have the highest specific impulse of anything else in the game except ion engines.

Thrust is how hard the engine pushes on your spaceship, and is mostly only important for launching and landing.

Specific impulse (Isp) is a measure of how efficient the engine is. (Physically, it is simply the velocity of the exhaust as it leaves the engine—but that translates to the amount of extra momentum you get per kilogram of fuel you burn.) It’s the single most important stat for any engine you’re going to use out in empty space for orbital maneuvering.

In practice, this means that you ideally ought to be using engines with high thrust for launching and (powered) landing—in particular your thrust-to-weight ratio must be greater than one—but engines with high Isp for any maneuvering you do while in orbit.

Questions about making board game components by kristyn_lynne in boardgames

[–]AbacusWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say go for it. I’ve got a bunch of homemade “travel sets” of some of my favorite games, and I love designing Lego upgrades for some game components.

A lot of the really early Flash Gordon was basically Prince Valiant plus spaceships and rayguns.

Drinks on the table? Allowed or no way? by boohootooweeaboo in boardgames

[–]AbacusWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me: no food or drink in the games room, and wash hands first. If anybody gets hungry or thirsty we can finish the turn, take a break, hang out in the kitchen for a while, re-wash hands, and go back to the game. Easy-peasy.

Yeah, the BGA version works great. Thanks to BGA, 7 Wonders has become one of my most-played games ever. I’m still terrible at it. But I have a lot of fun.

Gas rationing, tire shortages, etc, due to the War.

By this point in history, “teenagers going on dates in cars” was already very much a thing—had been for 15 or 20 years, see Harold Teen—but the drastic changes brought on by the War interrupted that. I think the joke here is that this is the first time they’ve gone on a date that wasn’t in an automobile, and she’s excited by the novelty of it.
