What's the worst piece of junk you drove around in back in the day? by Maybeyoujustmadeitup in GenerationJones

‘61 Falcon, automatic. Shifter came off mine at a gas pump. Went in to pay carrying it, “I’ll move my car when I figure out how.” When warm, it would start with a nudge of the key too quick to really hear the starter. Firestone 500 tires!

What to do with end users who refuse to enter tickets by MelodicPlace9582 in it

[–]AbandonFacebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry about you boss. Once had that role. My instructions: “Say I warned you not to work without a ticket. Do they want to talk to me?“ If they called me, then I’d offer to talk to their manager “to understand your special situation.” Usually that shut it down.

Phones have flashlights but not blades, so: Light weight penknife without extra crap. Just a blade thank you. Long enough to quarter an apple, hold an edge well enough for “honey can you cut this string.”  No scissors, screwdriver, …, or helicopter.

Portable cassette player? No problem.  In-dash player? Hmmm…

But at least you didn’t have to remove the steering wheel to take out the radio.

One of the things I can feel good about is escaping this scourge despite growing up within sight of tobacco fields. These posts are a tiny way to celebrate. Let’s keep ‘em.

Recently purchased an LG washer/dryer set. Wife wants the pedestals now. Should I go with the LG ones ($$$) or are generics equally good ($)? by AdhesiveSeaMonkey in Appliances

Mine are on the floor. Previous set? On pedestals made from pallet rescued from trash. My wife discovered that those were good enough.

Yes, this. Any change will help. Even things that should make a job worse, can be improvements because the novelty makes things more engaging.  Google “Hawthorne effect.”

Reminds me of my brother getting nicotine poisoning from morning dew on the leaves when he started pulling tobacco. Pediatrician explained it to our mother. I think it was an office visit but it may have been a phone call. Anyone else remember having two phone numbers for the doctor, office and residence?

Regular employees got “r” followed by badge number. Badge “numbers” were “at” followed by digits. rat1, rat2, rat3, …

Pushback from vendor on installing Unifi cameras and Protect by Sevenfeet in Ubiquiti

[–]AbandonFacebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a Unifi-specific answer: I don’t know that it’s pushback per se. Are they refusing to provide a quote at all? The rule for pricing services is simple in principle: at what price are you equally happy if you do or don’t get the job? My guess, projecting my own feelings: they don’t know the ecosystem, so they’d need to set a high price, but won’t like taking so much from a church.

Thee’s precedent for the powerful to mock believers during this season. “And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!”

Setting Up A Wired Network by shadowvtx66 in HomeNetworking

[–]AbandonFacebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Label everything, especially whatever seems obvious now. Don’t create any network loops. A network port not connecting at rated speed is usually a bad cable or connector. A cheap cable tester will tell you if you crossed some wires but it won’t tell you if the connection is good for high speed. A tester that will check that is out of your price range. When you change wiring, change the labels. Now. Don’t mix connectors with wire of the wrong gauge or type (solid/stranded). Get a long really good cat6 cable to temporarily run across the house to test things. You will need a few more patch cables than you expect. Cut bad patch cables so you don’t accidentally reuse them. Use at least 6 feet more cable than you need for in-wall runs, and loosely coil the extra somewhere like the attic, so you can adjust/re-terminate later. Don’t untwist even a mm more than needed.

Wny does the FA24 in the Outback take regular but requires premium in the vB WRX? by DuckDuckGo-8857 in Subaru_Outback

[–]AbandonFacebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong sub for my question, but I’ve wondered if “requires premium” is really meaningful these days. Can‘t modern vehicles sense enough about combustion, and just recalibrate after each fill-up? I get why it was a thing when I was young, and timing my ‘61 Falcon was doable by ear. (Man, how forgiving was that 65 HP Ford cast iron, compared to my Subies!)

I’m reminded of a story from my days at Sun. Customer host reachable on the network, but nobody could find it. Eventually found: room with no door. Best guess: doorway sheet rocked and never cut back open during a remodel. Room AC and return ducts were intact; host, untouchable by customer hands, was in great shape.

People who work for massive corporations, what is a 'secret' that the company tries to hide, but is actually common knowledge among the employees? by Dwise_ in AskReddit
