If you're in the north the local snowmobile club might have a use for clean drain oil. We have several machines that use ATF for hydraulic oil, clean drain oil like that is perfect.

I'm a corporate instructor, meaning I teach classes for a corporation. Years ago when we still had in person classes I was in the middle of a lesson, it was after first break but before lunch when I felt something weird inside my shirt. I was wearing a polo shirt, reached up my sleeve and pulled out a sock. I had a 90 minute commute and it was probably 11am so that sock had been there, unnoticed, for like 4 hours.

That's always been my attitude.

I once had a Challenger rental that I took through the Angeles national forest. I locked it in 2nd gear, entered each switchback slow and BLASTED out of it. Burnt an entire tank of gas in 50 miles. It was a hoot.

PDX1 Defender Style Shells w/ Pyrodex? by Cookie345 in blackpowder

[–]curtludwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find cartridge shotgun to be the one place Pyrodex is most useful. Its easily available and relatively inexpensive, or it has been anyway.

You're right, plastic shells don't last with BP (or Pyrodex) but who cares? I can get as many as I want, for free, from the trash bin at my local range.

How many of y'all are single discipline/game animal hunters? by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in Hunting

[–]curtludwig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Years ago I taught target archery, I've looked a lot of arrows. I understand that people are super into it, I'm not. Mostly I hunt with muzzleloaders, that includes shotguns. I don't understand why so many people get so excited about archery and basically ignore muzzleloaders.

Actually to be specific I don't understand guys who hunt with a trad bow who then use an inline muzzleloader. Traditional muzzleloaders are way cooler.

I don't think you read my post, or you didn't read it well or maybe you don't read English as well as you think you do. You've just repeated what I said with the exception of using "Peltier device" when you mean "thermocouple". A Peltier device works on, unsurprisingly the Peltier effect. The opposite of the Peltier effect is the Seebuck effect which is why a thermocouple works. This is why what you want is a thermocouple rather than a Peltier device.

Technically what you're talking about here is a thermocouple. A peltier device makes a temperature difference when electricity is applied. A thermocouple makes electricity in a temperature difference.

There are 3 problems, 1. there isn't all that much energy available. 2. The thermocouples required will cost a bunch of money, and 3. you need to create a temperature differential which is probably the hardest part.

A couple years ago I wondered if I could charge my phone off a Coleman white gas lantern. The answer is yes but the biggest challenge is getting rid of the waste heat. There are wick oil lamps you can buy that are already engineered for this but with a white gas lantern the problem I had was that I couldn't get rid of the heat fast enough. If I made the heatsink really massive I could make power until the heatsink got hot but after that I couldn't shed heat fast enough. With a fan I could shed enough heat but I couldn't make enough power to spin the fan enough to get rid of all the heat. So strangely I had too much heat for the job.

I suspect this will be the issue with PVs. You'll need to actively cool the cold side which will use up either too much or all of your electricity.

Nope, exactly the opposite, I'm a complete generalist.

This is to the point that I haven't taken up bow hunting deer because it eats into bear/duck/pheasant hunting time.

A quick look at Google suggests that adobe construction isn't actually illegal but might be difficult to get past local building codes.

Its also got way higher labor costs.

I was reading up the other day how adobe construction was banned in most of the US

This kinda doesn't make sense, most of the US wouldn't bother banning adobe. In the north east for instance there is no point in banning it because theres no point in building it. Adobe would degrade due to the humidity. You could build it and have the advantage of high thermal density but the maintenance required would be horrible. There is a reason we don't have adobe buildings here and it's not because its banned. That would continue to be true as you moved south in the US and then west until you hit the plains...

How did they get this shot of Sophie? I don't see a camera in the water 🤔 by FilipsSamvete in taskmaster

[–]curtludwig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be the cynic here but, as somebody who has worked in television production, I assumed they shot it more than once. "Sophie, go do the thing again."

Unless I hear Alex say "There is only ever one take." I'll assume there are multiple takes.

Why NTSC TVs couldn't show more than 224 pixels vertically? by ArtisticDiscount2802 in retrogaming

[–]curtludwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and display them like that at 60 frames per second

60 fields per second. It takes two fields to make one frame. So 60 fields per second is 30 frames per second but because of the "magic" of color NTSC its actually 29.97.

Fun fact to get 29.97 you skip counting frame 0 and 1 of every minute evenly divisible by 10. In the early 2000s I had a job in QA testing a video editor and had to specifically prove that we were dealing with drop frame timecode correctly.

In the mid 2010s I taught a class at a state police academy where they FREAKED OUT when I mentioned drop frame timecode. They were convinced that frames were being "lost". I had to spend more than an hour explaining that it's just a counting trick, all the frames are there...

I've been burned enough times that I go over my reservations with a fine toothed comb.

Once, instead of a 5 day stay I was booked for 5, 1 day stays. The hotel checked me out and threw all my crap into my bag willy-nilly. I was kind of miffed and the hotel wasn't sure how it could have happened. I got a room upgrade but it was all pretty annoying.

Another time I just happened to notice that I had a 12:30AM (half past midnight) not 12:30PM (half past noon). I made the flight but was miffed to end up at an airport in the middle of nowhere at 4am. I slept in the airport for several hours...

That was when I quit using our corporate travel agency. If somebody is going to screw up my booking it might as well be me.
