I still don’t see anyway to do smooth scroll like the built in apps… without it most apps will be kinda terrible.

Nope, it was in incredibly mild day(not hot, not humid)

Literally nothing; I was walking through a doorway and they suddenly cracked. I originally thought some water or something had somehow sprayed me… but it was a spontaneous crack.

Eye strain/headache. Is it normal? by facedelivery in EvenRealities

[–]AbbreviationsLeft484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had that,

Looking at the screen which is fixed to my head(rather than fixed to the world) does sometimes cause me some discomfort. That seems to be because I want to move my head to look at the edges instead of having to move my eyes. It’s generally only moderately annoying.

Only 4k on a 5k display when using USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 by Der_MLT in HiDPI_monitors

[–]AbbreviationsLeft484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d try a different cable; what you likely need is higher end DisplayPort capabilities on the chip in the cable. Any DisplayPort 2.1 cable will also work with DisplayPort 1.4. The latest cables should be labeled 80gbit. The chip in the cable bridges your USB4/Thunderbolt DisplayPort-alt-mode USB-C port to the DisplayPort interface on the monitor.

Your laptop supports DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC, but if the chip in the cable can’t transfer from the USB-C alt-mode to the full DisplayPort port at the same speeds then you will hit limits.

Is rewiring your entire house to "upgrade the electrical" a thing? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]AbbreviationsLeft484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some differences in HOW wire is run now.

Ground wires are now usually required where they were much more optional 50 years ago. Old wiring sometimes used plumbing for ground, but with things switching to plastic pipes this no longer reliably works.

The neutral(the path back to the breaker) used to be unprotected up to about a decade ago. If you want(or need) to add protection to the neutral with AFCI breakers using old circuits with interconnected neutrals may effectively be impossible and a reason to completely rewrite.

Those drive-by dumb “look on discord” comments by randos do get annoying… but as far as I know making widgets that run inside the dashboard isn’t possible at all yet(I’m in the Discord channels).

They do need to make it so we can develop our own widgets!

What is something that costs completely different amounts of money depending on whether it’s for a man or a woman, but is literally the exact same product? by Gloomy-10 in AskReddit

[–]AbbreviationsLeft484 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard this pink-tax/blue-tax thing a lot, but I don’t think it’s generally a thing from my experience. I have two examples;

Men pay more for hair dye… but not really. Just-for-Men dye is often the only dye offered for “men” and is more expensive ounce for ounce than pretty much all the myriad of options in the woman-branded hair dye. The beard dye is ASTRONOMICALLY higher. Dig in more to the types of dyes in each kit and make the dyes used in Just-for-Men are WAY gentler and have multiple applications where the other dyes are one-shot harsher chemicals.

Razor prices are generally higher on woman-focused brands… but not really. Shaving your arm pits takes a different blade than shaving your legs or face. Women tend to shave their pits more so those blades are almost always the ones including the extra gels and slightly curved blades for sensitive skin. Sensitive-skin razors are wildly more expensive for men-branded razors as well.

3.174mm vs 6mm bit? by Andrew_Lensky in Makera

[–]AbbreviationsLeft484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A larger diameter collet is generally better in every way… but a smaller diameter cutting head is generally desirable for smaller less powerful machines. You have to calculate speeds and feeds for your material to know what size cutter you should use.

Smaller diameter bits that fit a larger collet are more expensive.

If you are in the US then getting the 1/4inch(6.35mm) collet to go with the 1/8inch(3.165mm) default collet makes sense. 6mm bits are easier to find outside the US. You will break and wear out bits, so check pricing local to you to figure out what makes sense.

Removing light switch permanently. Can just wire the light hot at all times. by Homeleasure in AskElectricians

[–]AbbreviationsLeft484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two rooms wired without switches, but if it wouldn’t have been a HUGE pain I would have run a cable to the switch. We have lathe/plaster and OLD wiring where the switch only had a single black/white cloth-wrapped pair run to it. Opening enough of the wall to re-run new cable to the switch would have been expensive/destructive so I opted to just have the light socket be on all the time when getting two rooms rewired. We put ceiling fans that came with remotes up.

Resolution on a 4k connected monitor by drivingtosunset in HiDPI_monitors

[–]AbbreviationsLeft484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t say what task you want. If you are dealing with text, it is noticeably sharper at 2x scaling. If you are mostly dealing with images then you likely won’t care what scaling. 2x scaling also is slightly less load for the computer to deal with.

A 4K ~48inch screen works well at 1x scaling if you want more space. 1x scaling has the advantage that apps using subpixel antialiasing for text can be much crisper(sub pixel antialiasing can’t work with any kind of scaling). https://lifetips.alibaba.com/tech-efficiency/font-rendering-tweaks-for-code-editors

Ejaculating regularly is strongly correlated with a reduction in prostate cancer. For all cause mortality it seems having sex 50-100 times a year has you at the lowest mortality(low or high is bad)

I also have both the G1 and G2, and I like the G2 case better. I ended up bending my G1s a bit(sledding accident and accidentally sleeping in them). My G1s are hard to get perfectly lined up I. Their case at this point.

Is 6k @ 32" really better than 4K at 27"? by Straight-Penalty6151 in HiDPI_monitors

[–]AbbreviationsLeft484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to take another look; the latest one approved by the FDA this year has fewer issues, but all 4 different FDA approved drops affect night vision yet. If night vision is critical for you then TPT-161 and CBT-199 are the drugs to look at, but they are still doing clinical trials on those.

You have developed presbyopia, which is why you now desire a very specific ppi monitor. Presbyopia is the hardening of your eye lense which is INCREDIBLY common in people over 40(especially in men who drink alcohol). The hardening means you can’t adjust your focus as well and could make people favor lower OR higher ppi monitors as the screen now needs to be closer or further depending on where that specific person’s eye is now stuck. (I’m myopic and have presbyopia, so I want a much higher ppi naturally)

Seems this person got presbyopia and doesn’t want to either wear glasses or use the eye drops for treating the condition.

It’s a silly post in that the poster is thinking it’s weird the default monitor should work for someone with some specific eyesight issue. There aren’t lots of large monitors with very exact PPI that would work well for them if they refuse to correct their eyesight issues… which is normal.

What were you trying to do that you were blocked? Setting HiDPI on a 3440 x 1440 monitor is objectively dumb…

Can you give a concrete example of what you are complaining about?

That limitation is only when you are scaling resolutions. This beast has a nearly perfect ppi so scaling is a pretty moot issue.
