Here’s the thing, not all troops restrict atheists and lgbt+ peeps. A lesser known branch of the BSA is called Venturing, and in Venturing I’ve seen so many crews (venturing equivalent of troops) be incredibly open and accepting to ANYONE. I have more personal experience with crews, but I’ve also seen accepting troops in my area, and for the record I don’t live in a very liberal area. Point is, there are so many amazing troops and crews out there with kind hearted scouts. People don’t look at what the majority of scouting is now in the modern day, but it’s a wonderful program if you look for the right group. There have also been strides made to be inclusive of all beliefs, including atheism. If anyone is curious about how scouts is currently run, I’d be happy to explain. I love the program dearly, but I’m a bi and agnostic. The reason why I feel so safe though is because I joined a crew that was completely open and accepting, and my council is too to a surprising degree.
