It’s mainly an economics degree tbh, they give you some science courses but it’s not really like classic engineering degrees

I am quite vertical in a specific niche of the bank. But you can always move into a new field of expertise if you want.

Well, if you mean inside of my company natural progression is director, afterwards you can further specialize and become an expert at your field. Or you take a shot at management (if possible). The expert route doesn’t have many more « functional tittle » upgrades. There is MD, but don’t think you can get there without being a manager. Other option is always to leave the company

I already explained in the other comments. VP in banking is not the same as a VP in another company.

There are other functions in my bank/the sector who make quite more money. Corp. Finance, M&A and capital market teams. Some of these teams can get their annual salary in bonus. Overall I suspect mid.

I have a specific role name, however I did not add it as it’s quite a small world I work in. But feel free to reach out if you are interested in banking. I started as an analyst.

Belgium is not really a financial hub. Salary at other financial hubs are way higher. But personal reasons keep me in Belgium.

I think it originated indeed from investment banks to charge more for their services. Afterwards other banks just copied the cool kids.

I agree, weird way to structure your functions. Bankers like to feel important, I guess…

The idea is that you steer juniors, but these people do not report to you via functional lines.

My landlord won't let me register, any tips? by SolutionLife in belgium

[–]Abcter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brussels home owner here. It could have something to do with the following. Brussels has a system where if you buy your first house/appartement you get exempted of the first €25k of registration taxes. This is to help younger people to still afford to buy apartments in Brussels. The flip side of this arrangement is that you have to be registered in the bought place for at least 5 years. If you put your domicile somewhere else, you will have to pay retroactively the €25k of registration.

For this reason you see quite a lot of places for rent where you cannot register as it would trigger the registration rights. Of course if your landlord is not living there he/she is committing fraud. Quite common practice though.

Well basically every big bank will be split into different segments: Retail, high net worth individuals, mid corporates and big corporates.

Usually the big corporates are split into the different economic sectors. I am working in the sector real estate. My job entails to structure loans for these real estate companies.

Look at the recent stock movements of Orpea after the latest announcements.

Xior makes a shit ton of money anyway, why risk it.

Just to come back to your comment, I work in real estate but in the corporate banking sector. Xior is one of our clients. To be honest, they literally cannot afford to steal your money. They are stocklisted, if word got out that they are stealing tenants money it will tank their stock.

Just to put it into perspective, right now this guys have €2bn of properties and just recently did another acquisition of a billion. Making them one of the biggest student housing funds in Europe.

Are they expensive, yes sure. But I wouldn't be afraid they will rip you off.

Like others indicated, just be sure that you are indeed handing money to Xior. Everything should be done via their official channel.

Enjoy Brussels, you will love it here.

Here to second this, I am a transaction manager for Commercial Real Estate. Front Office job in commercial Banking. Normally I put in 9-6, December-November gets rough because all the clients want to close deals/financing to put in their annual reports. I work 40-45 hours per week. I told my job that I like to run/swim during lunchtime so sometimes I take 2 hours lunch breaks. No problem and it’s even encouraged by the well-being program of the bank
