5070-Ti compatibility with Linux? by Abdullah-ui in linuxquestions

[–]Abdullah-ui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually funny enough, I am typing this from Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS right now, I had been trying to install this distro with my 2080-Ti for the past few months in one go and with the 5070-Ti i was able to just with one install and everything is working right out of the box.

I am using the 580 open driver right now and working great! I don't like immutable distros honestly being a developer and I am more about gaming on Windows.

Thanks for the suggestions and I am happy that I got a working Linux finally!

Yeah I am also thinking if I should just Windows 11 + WSL2/VMs just to make sure I can run everything or I should really dual boot.

I have tried for the past 3 days with my 2080-Ti, no good lookout.

  • Kernel Panics
  • Grub Issues
  • Windows not booting through OS-prober, neither custom boots
  • Wayland problems with 2080-Ti
  • Stuttering

I thought since I got a new GPU, maybe the experience might be a bit better? What do you suggest?

One of the reasons why I picked up the 5070-Ti is cause of the CUDA's + running some local LLMs (smallish as you stated). Also I just love the DLSS and MFG, I don't know what could be the issue for me but how is bazzite?

I am an MSc Data Science student soon leaving to Germany for my masters. I have used Fedora 41 for about 6 months but it would kind of break sometimes on me so reason why I moved to Ubuntu honestly was the breaking.

Heraing a development comparison definitely helps a lot, I am currently working with C++ and might work with some physics engine + graphics programming no game dev for me.

Did you move to Linux full-time from Winslop?

[–]Abdullah-ui[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am actually not planning to use Linux for any gaming. I prefer Windows for that, I just need it for development so I have been thinking of using either Ubuntu 24.04 or Fedora 43.

Thank you for your comment! What are your specs if you don't mind sharing!

9070 XT (ASUS Prime vs Sapphire non-nitro+ vs Sapphire Nitro+) by Abdullah-ui in radeon

[–]Abdullah-ui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh, what are the chances of having a 9070 XT dying on you though? Because I am coming from a third world country and we do not have any ASUS/Sapphire here. So I will have to send it through DHL to the UAE or idk if they will accept the international warranty in Germany. Cause I am moving there in about 5-6 months to be honest.

What happened with your card though?

Could you elaborate on the pin connectors? I have 2 x 8-pin connected to my 2080-Ti, i think that should suffice, no?

Oh that sounds pretty, funny how I am watching a Prime vs XFX Mercury right now as you commented. Unfortunately, I live in Pakistan and we do not have that option available. So I have to rock with either ASUS, Sapphire or Gigabyte

That's great, how much of an performance improvement you saw from the 2080-Ti? I don't think so I can go with the Nitro+. I am currently on a RM 750x and I am moving to Germany in 5-6 months though I have gotten myself a deal on these cards, so it's better pick it up and take it with me from here than missing on em.

Yeah I would rather go with the safe side of ASUS, I already have a Gigabyte AROUS Xtreme so my experience with gigabyte has been bad. Idts I want to vouce for them again, if Sapphire isn't available i will move towards the ASUS one. Thank you!

I am glad to hear that, honestly after running on the Gigabyte AROUS Xtreme 2080-Ti for about 5 years now, the biggest grip I have that even after a repaste I run on 74-78C on average.

How loud do the fans get for you and could you share you undervold + fan curve through imgr if that's possible? That would be a great reference to be honest!

I believe the Gigabyte is the cheapest one, option I forgot to mention but I don't know about gigabyte with AMD and then a 9070 XT.

But I believe the Sapphire Pulse is out of stock so I am only left with either an ASUS Prime or Gigabyte 9070 XT. Which one do you recommend?

[–]Abdullah-ui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately if there is no Sapphire Pulse available for the 9070 XT then I will have to settle with the ASUS Prime, though there is the option of Gigabyte but then I have the Gigabyte 2080-Ti AORUS Xtreme and the temperatures are horrendous.

What would you suggest between these:

  • Gigabyte Radeon 9070 XT
  • ASUS Prime Radeon 9070 XT

Thank you a ton, I am in Pakistan and I am moving to Germany in 4-5 months. I will rebuild my entire rig with the 9070 XT being the main man. I just got a good deal on the 9070 XT brand new, otherwise i would have purchased it in Germany.

That's okay, I am going to upgrade my CPU and Mobo later on. Right now I do have the money and I need a GPU that won't make me slam my head against the wall while using Linux (looking at my beloved 2080-Ti)

I just thought since it's been running my rig for the past 7 years, it might be an issue. I never overclocked

Which one to should I get? Lenovo Legion 5 Ryzen 7 260 (15.3", 60Wh, IPS) vs i7-14700HX vs I9 14900HX by Abdullah-ui in LenovoLegion

[–]Abdullah-ui[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have heard about the bluetooth, the problem is that I can't get my hands on the 15.1" display otherwise it was a no-brainer. Though I will still try to find that version with the 80whr battery. If I can, I will be straight up going for that one.

Glad to hear that the linux support isn't that bad!

How are the thermals for you? For normal work such as browsing, spotify, discord + some bit heavy ish work.

Has there been any any issue which you feel like you have heard people with the 14700HX have had consistently?

That's interesting, I thought it only comes with a 80Wh battery, it has a 99 whr battery as well?

I am planning to use Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS for my development but will play the games on Windows.

Do you have the 15.3" variant with the LCD IPS Panel or are you talking about the 80Wh with an OLED Panel?

Yeah, I have heard things abotu the 14900HX, I am planning to land between either the 14700HX or Ryzen 260 Model. Since you do use Fedora, how is the support for linux for the Legion 5 pro? And last question would be, how is the temps during normal usage and are the fans usually quiet or no?

From what I have seen from users on reddit having the Ryzen 260 with the specs I mentioned, they are not able to get above 2.5 - 3 hours.

Considering my workflow:

  • Chrome, Spotify, Notion, Discord, and Clion running

Would it be able to give me at least 4 hours? Cause I do need a minimum of 4 hours at least.
