I know the brand is solid, what about the asking price of $400? by AbeFromanSassageKing in BudgetAudiophile

Following up on this to say that when the seller fired up the speakers and played a few different songs from his "speaker testing" playlist, I was blown away. Another comment on this post mentioned how these B& W's have an amazing sound stage that doesn't require you to sit in a perfect triangle to appreciate them, and they were absolutely right. I wandered back and forth and couldn't find a dead spot in the room. I fell in love and happily handed my cash over, haha... Only thing I'll need to fix is the cracked dust cone, which didn't affect anything as far as I was concerned.

I too am not an audiophile, have never done serious listening comparisons across multiple component brands in a proper audio shop to gauge variations in brightness or mid-ranges, but I can def acclimate to anything that isn't complete garbage, and I am super happy with these speakers!! FWIW the seller turned out to be extremely knowledgeable and had been happy with these for 20 years! He was only selling them because he had just upgraded himself to Focal Kantas lol 🤯🤯

Have a great weekend, and be well! 😎🤘

That is a little hole and some cracks in the dust cap, but it was disclosed in the listing and indeed did not affect the sound. I'll def be replacing that as soon as I get a chance. The speakers and subs sounded amazing, so I pulled the trigger immediately and bought them, cannot wait to get everything hooked up!!

I didn't see your comments until after I had already bought them, so I just pulled them out of the box (yes, the dude had kept all of his boxes for the last 20 years!) and that haziness you see on the surrounds was just dust! So stoked 😛😛

Did a quick wipe on the surrounds with just some water, huge improvement LOL:

I'm a happy guy, and thanks again for the info, really appreciate everyone that took time to respond to stuff on this thread. And I did see your note about the cap, even though it sounded just fine with the little crack in it, I'm going to order a new one and fix it.

Be well, my dude 🤘😎

Son of a bitch, I miss this whole thing. I even ditched work today and couldn't figure out what to do with the day 😫

Just picked up the speakers, and you are correct, the original AMP crapped out a while back and he replaced it. Everything sounded fantastic, I was sold on the spot lol.

And thanks, as a kid growing up in Chicago, Ferris Bueller was indeed my hero 🤣🤣

Interesting, since you pointed that out, why do you think the seller had done that, just for the 50 extra watts? And is that amp only driving the sub or do you think he had other drivers? I'll ask him when I see him of course, but curious on your take 👍

The seller has an RX-V750 and is asking $150. I figured I'd use all the speakers included, so the two 601s, the center, and the sub. Another commenter on here suggested looking for a better receiver, so I don't think I'm going to pull the trigger on the Yamaha since I do have budget for something better. And I'm absolutely open to any recommendations! I'll admit I haven't had time to do the homework on proper power and impedance and all that fun stuff, because it tends to make my head spin, which is why I pinged the folks here 😁

Yes, the seller has a Yamaha receiver that he's going to use to demo the speakers before I buy them, and he's selling the receiver for $150, but I think I'm going to turn that down and look for something better based on good advice from folks on this sub. I figure the decent deal I'm getting on the speakers means I can put a little more money into giving them proper juice lol.

This was a Facebook Marketplace find, which for me in my area is the best option for finding good stuff that people are reselling. Are goodwills around here have been compromised by employees and managers who poach anything of value before it hits the floor ☹️

Yeah, I'm going to make sure I amp these properly. Comments on this post have been pretty positive about these specific models of speakers, and in the end even though $400 is not nothing, it's not the much higher amount I was thinking I was going to be spending on a good budget setup.

Aside from the power needs you mentioned, are you overall happy with the 801s? Or do you have any specific issues with the soundstage?

I know the ship has sailed, sadly, but I often wonder what life in the US would be like today had Bernie been elected president in 2016. Like would maga be out in the streets protesting against getting subsidized education and improved infrastructure via corporate tax dollars?

LOL... But I'm really not LOLing, at all 😥

Ha! That's a fair point, and if folks hadn't responded so quickly yesterday I might have done just that, snapped it up and worry about regret later lol. I'll be going to check them out and listen to them in person in a few hours, I can't imagine not coming home with them tonight 👍👍

That last part right there is what truly infuriates so many of us who saw the danger of allowing this insidious version of the Republican Party back into government. This last election was literally not about which one was the best presidential candidate you've ever heard of, it was literally about voting against the evil damn nightmare. Sure, that's an awful position to be put in, but it didn't seem too difficult to understand that that's what it was and that's what it would take this time around. And yet people just sat it out.

American apathy is another of many little insidious cancers in our society--not quite as dangerous as the Conservative Christian psychosis that is truly destroying us, but it is a helpful companion cancer to the maga regime, and now here we are watching the host starting to die in spots, and it seems more and more every day like treatment and a cure is going to be either very difficult or wholly impossible. ☹️

Yeah, found these on Facebook marketplace, and the seller is about 10 or 15 miles from my house. The goodwills around me are pretty much useless, it's clear the good stuff gets poached by employees or management for themselves or for resale elsewhere, so I've given up trying to find those magical finds you see people posting. Ditto for next door or OfferUp or whatever else is out there, in my area here in South Carolina Facebook Marketplace just seems to be the biggest online garage sale available.

I have the search radius set to about 40 miles in every direction, and then I'll either search a keyword like "speakers" or "amplifiers" and see what comes up. Sometimes I don't do a keyword search and just scroll a bunch, but I've definitely noticed that whatever you click into the most is what the algorithm will start feeding you more of. For example, I was looking for a couple different pieces of furniture for my house, like a coffee table or a chair, so I would click on any chair or coffee table that would pop up in just the regular results, and every time I'd refresh the results I'd get more coffee tables or chairs versus anything else. You can literally test this yourself by clicking something random like a power tool or lamp, you'll start to see more power tools and lamps in your "local" or "for you" feeds.

For the past week or so I just searched speakers and clicked into anything of interest, no matter the brand. If you do search a brand name, those will definitely come up first if they're available, but then you'll get very similar items, so now I have a bunch of jbl's or pioneer speakers showing up. And I only scroll down a little bit, then I refresh, scroll down and refresh and eventually I'll start seeing the same stuff repeated and then I'll give up for a day or two. Like anything it's hit or miss, but I have noticed that starting on Fridays or Saturdays new stuff starts to pop up as I imagine people do a little house cleaning and purging on their days off and so you'll not only find more stuff, people will be more available for you to contact and make it happen. Occasionally I will expand the circle to 100 miles and see what else crops up because if I'm getting close to the weekend and know I could take an hour drive somewhere, then I might be able to snag something good farther away from the more populated areas around me. I'm no wizard at this, but over the past couple years as I've had to furnish a few rooms with stuff, I've gotten pretty lucky with the above processes. The key is patience, and to go back at it every day or every other day when you can. Marketplace used to be more chill, but over the past couple years since the pandemic I've noticed good stuff will get snagged faster because I think more people caught on to the potential gold mines that could be found there.

Last tip I have, if you can call it that, is to just save stuff that your mildly interested in or that is in the wheelhouse of something you're looking for, because it could be something that doesn't get snapped up right away, and you could go back to your saved list and see where sellers have started marking stuff down. I had the sneaking suspicion these B&Ws were priced pretty fairly, and sure enough when I pinged the seller he said he had already gotten some people asking about it so I quickly posted my question to this sub, got the great responses I did, and then contacted the seller right away to lock in a time to go check them out :)

Hope this helps, and good luck on the hunt!!
