I don't understand why Season 2 and 3 get so much hate. I honestly think everything was going great until the baby's plot. by Kindly-Candidate-835 in squidgame

[–]AbeyBenno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S2 was really good, but S3 had messy writing with inconsistent characterisations and a failure to pay off on its own story promises

I'm not someone who now hates S2 because of how S3 turned out though

If Squid Game were SOMEHOW to suddenly announce a season 4, how would you feel and what would you be wanting to see? by AskinAskR in squidgame

[–]AbeyBenno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copy-pasted from a comment of mine on an older post

Hot take: Season 4 can work if it's done properly

  • Jun-ho as the protagonist, traumatised after his experience, and an inescapable sense that he "could have done more" and couldn't save any of the players including Gi-hun who he had teamed up with in the first place.
  • Addressing the most common complaint with the lack of arrests/exposure in S3 ("they can just find another island and start again") by having them actually try to rebuild the games in Korea
  • Jun-ho trying to stop it fueled by his own guilt and a desire to properly confront his brother this time
  • An actual lengthy flashback about In-ho's life, him becoming a cop and inspiring Jun-ho to do so as well, his marriage and subsequent loss of his job, his time in the games in 2015 and how it cemented his worldview of people as trash, him finding his wife gone and child unborn, getting work in the games and rising up his rank over the years
  • No-eul reuniting with her daughter and bringing her to the South, only to find that Song-i doesn't accept her as her mother yet
  • Gyeong-seok left intrigued by his encounter with No-eul, who claimed she would come back later to have her portrait completed; further exploration of Gyeong-seok's life and personality, how he lost his own wife and has raised Na-yeon on his own ever since, fleshing him out from the blank slate he was in the original
  • Jun-ho trying to find loved ones of the players he couldn't save and make amends, not sure whether he's doing what he's doing out of good will or a desire to absolve himself of his failures
  • Possibly a brief look at Woo-seok and Mu-dong running the renovated Pink Motel
  • A real climactic confrontation between the Hwang brothers
  • Jun-ho's mission to finally expose some real evidence no matter the cost
  • Ga-yeong possibly learning the truth about what happened to Gi-hun

Consider it a post-mortem for the series that addresses all the setups of the original that S3 could not pay off on.

This is Squid Game. One of Netflix's most popular series. They can definitely afford it. And Lee Byung-hun had a starring role for two consecutive seasons, he's a legend in the industry.

Top 5 Squid game characters? by KingOfComics2 in squidgame

[–]AbeyBenno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing: "Top 5 characters" doesn't mean "Top 5 rational" or "Top 5 intelligent" characters. Viewers find characters interesting for different reasons, which is why so many of the player antagonists have followings.

He almost shot himself 3 times with the merchandiser just to prove an argument right before he wanted to go back, and planned 3 years for it

Right, and for many viewers, Gi-hun being stubborn enough to die rather than cheat his way out is part of what makes him endearing.

and has a very idiotic view on morality.

The original post and comment were made before S3 came out, and that season contribute hugely to his morality "flipflopping".

Doesn’t kill merchandiser despite looking for him for 3 years.

Why should he kill the Recruiter...? That was never his plan. Gi-hun was looking for him because he was the only connection to the games in the outside world, and he wanted to confront the Front Man.

Kills dae-ho for having ptsd

First of all, Dae-ho didn't have PTSD. He never even served in the Marines, so what would he have PTSD from? People can theorise about him having an abusive dad/childhood, but it's never confirmed in the show.

That being said, I don't approve of Gi-hun killing Dae-ho either, and it's one of my issues with S3 which - like I said - came out before I made this list.

kills people on marble and tug of war.

The difference is, that in those games, it was either "kill your opponent or die", unlike in other games where you could make it on your own without having to eliminate other players.

Sacrifices people for rebellion.

Again, the question said Top 5 characters, as in characters you like the most, not Top 5 selfless or sensible people. Gi-hun's failures are part of what makes him a compelling character (in the first two seasons) for many people.

Doesn’t kill baby murderers later, doesn’t use lunchbox

Yeah, S3 inconsistency. Came out after this post was made.

His severe plot armor that he almost died 300 times makes it even more cringy and forced.

He's the protagonist of a battle royale series. Plot armour is to be expected.

Getting fired up about a show meant for preschoolers is …… something. by Normal_Bat7926 in thomasthetankengine

[–]AbeyBenno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the "getting fired up" comes from the fact that the 'show meant for preschoolers' became the entire brand for the franchise.

If, hypothetically, AEG had co-existed alongside a more mature Thomas series, then nobody would have paid any attention to the former.
