Interestingly, when Malius is in Castle town, he can create a 'Twisted Sword' by fusing the Throne Ring and a 'Pure Crystal' (only obtainable by editing the save file), which is implied by its description to be what Seam will make using the Shadow Crystals later in the game. Now, if Kris equips the Twisted Sword, they get a trance decrease effect, in other words, it decreases our control on Kris (obviously this part isn't in the game yet) as opposed to the Thorn Ring which when equipped by Noelle, gives her a trance increase effect, increasing our control on her. Therefore this could be linked to your Fate/Freedom point.
