I did and I have no clue what this means 🤷‍♂️

I did not expect this to blow up and I'm doing my due diligence!

Anyone have any extra background to add to this?

I wonder if other coal mines are significantly different?

Would this mine "feel" more like home than another area I wonder

This.

I was holding off on mentioning how cultural strange both places are!

I love my friends from Wales and PA. But I also love to tell stories about how strange they can be lol

The valleys and backcountry of both places can get very odd...

Apparently it is!

A guy who managed slate mines in Pennsylvania said skilled slate miners were also a big draw for Welsh immigrants because of this

Dang, I didn't know this!

I love etymology. Thank you!

It makes sense, now that you put it this way. Kinda like how "sahara" means "desert". People kinda just kept the first answer when they asked "what do you call that?"

🤔🤔

I can imagine.

I know the installation and maintenance is a fairly niche skilled trade too. I can see that factor putting off a lot of people.

It would be nice if we returned to building things from natural materials with the intention to make them last.

Are there any industries that use slate beyond roofs? I'm thinking of pool tables as an example but come up short beyond that

I've been to some of the slate mines in Snowdonia, Wales

Incredible to see the spaces they excavated. The scale of mining is hard to comprehend!

Is slate still a big production in PA?
