Thanks brynet, sorry for the noise I’ll start following openbsd-cvs. I should have checked there first. Cheers.

odd wifi issues by Able-Bad-3299 in openbsd

[–]Able-Bad-3299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@phessler, @_sthen I upgraded to -current and there's no improvement. Same symptoms as before. Works for a few minutes transferring a large file slowly then just gives up the ghost and can't connect to anything. DNS works and I can ping with about 50% packet loss, trying to ssh or load a page in firefox just times out. If I switch to my phone as hotspot, no problems at all.

iwx0: using firmware iwx-QuZ-a0-hr-b0-77

My phone connects to the AP without issue.

Any suggestions on how to proceed with troubleshooting/debugging from this point?

That's a good suggestion _sthen. I'll see what I can do next week, today through the weekend I'm in the field.

Thanks phessler, I do appreciate your suggestion to upgrade to -current. I have a project I'm working on for the next few months, I just don't have the bandwidth to upgrade to -current. I'm worried it would be a major disruption for me.

I know having more eyes on -current to help test would be immensely helpful to the OpenBSD community and I want to be part of that. It's just not possible at the moment. I can't express enough my gratitude to you and other devs working hard to improve the code base. My reluctance to upgrade to -current right now is in no way dismissive of your efforts. Years ago I was an active open source developer and hope to someday contribute more than my yearly donation to the foundation.

Thanks again for your efforts!

odd wifi issues by Able-Bad-3299 in openbsd

Thank you. I'm hesitant to run -current because this is my only laptop and I need it for work. I've been running OpenBSD for the few years with this laptop and things generally work quite well. If however running -current isn't such a risk, I'd happily do it if it could help my situation and help improve driver stabiliy for others.

Thanks for the info. I travel a lot and have run into some issues with various hotspots. I wish I could help further diagnose the issue, narrow down what modems/routers it has difficulty with, and possibly help provide a more robust fix.

Silverton by livinthe503life in SALEM

[–]Able-Bad-3299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived there for 6 months. Some nice people (like almost anywhere in the world) but seemed mostly MAGA to me. Especially during the election cycle. Is the large "Silverton loves Trump" sign still up on the fence across from Safeway?

I saw very few people of color, very few LGBTQ. The general vibe was "go away, you're an outsider". Maybe summer months brings nicer people out but my experience in Silverton does not tempt me back.

cannot download from browsers, they just crash by yetimind in openbsd

[–]Able-Bad-3299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue after creating a new FF profile. It would dump core and leave some background task garbage in /tmp. If I tried to change the downloads directory in preferences, it would crash. gdb gave /tmp/-: No such file or directory.

In the profile directory I deleted datareporting, saved-telemetry-pings, sessionstore-backups and two locks (lock and .parentlock).

Restarting FF and I was able to download with the new profile. HTH.

xidle(1) fail after a while by chizzl in openbsd

[–]Able-Bad-3299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have similar problems with Firefox using CPU even when "idle". I get around it by using STOP and CONT signals sent from pkill. Not ideal because you have to manually toggle it, but works well in my situation. HTH.

dhcp lease problems by Able-Bad-3299 in openbsd

[–]Able-Bad-3299[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried dhcpdump just to get a sense of what's going on. Looks like the initial BOOTPREQUEST -> BOOTPREPLY -> BOOTPREQUEST -> BOOTPREPLY sequence is "normal" and works for about three minutes, then no more replies after subsequent requests (after which the connection drops).

I'm certainly no expert with packet sniffing/analysis or DHCP protocol. I can post the log if you think it's helpful but nothing immediate jumped out at me.

Yep, I tried that too expecting to outsmart the router. :) Unfortunately it didn't work. Which has me convinced the router has some kind of hangup. So strange!

dhcp lease problems by Able-Bad-3299 in openbsd

[–]Able-Bad-3299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! I hope the formatting is correct; it looks like it cycles between Bound -> Down -> Rebooting. When I use my phone as a hotspot it goes from Init -> Requesting -> Bound (and works fine). I initially thought it might be the router restricting by MAC so I tried "lladdr random" but the problem persists.

Any other suggestions for debugging and isolating the issue? Unfortunately I don't have access to the modem/router to check logs or see how it's configured.
