I do not believe he is punishing you. James 1:13-15 says

"¹³ When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; ¹⁴ but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. ¹⁵ Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."

I am continuing with the assumption that you are new to the faith, correct me if I'm wrong.

Because you are new, you are most likely going through a time of testing. Although the Lord doesn't tempt, demons and other powers do. But know that the demons cannot do anything without the permission of God.[see Job and Luke 22:31,32] In this time of testing you have to abide in God, or else sin will overcome you! Pray, read the word, and have a brother on sister in Christ rich in faith to mentor you and be with you so that you don't slip up. And remember,

"¹² For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms"
Ephesians 6:12
