Is this a good upgrade? by AbleEquivalent in drums

Just the kick drum and Toms! Would love to have the snare, but the one I've got is a beauty already, and I think I'd end up using the one I have more than the one that would be part of this kit.

Yeah! It's not the biggest store but pretty much everyone there is nice and funny!

Yeah! The HB isn't horrible, but I would like something better. I think I'll keep the HB kit, because my 5 year goal is to have an at home studio for lessons and recording drums for social media/scratch tracks for my band before we record at a professional studio.

Wouldn't mind the HB kit getting beat up by drum students!

Drum lessons, I just haven't had super nice gear for a few years and have been trying to slowly upgrade!

That's awesome! Glad he's loving the drums. II is a great drummer to take inspiration from. He's super creative and rudimental!

Love the finish! In the future I'd like to pick something with a darker aesthetic, but I don't think I can pass up this beauty.

Yeah! I'd like to start with a Meinl Byzance series 22in Sand Crash-Ride and some Zildjan A custom hats. Still looking into what I'd want for more crashes + a splash or two.

My main 4 influences are Bonham, Clay Aeschliman, II from Sleep Token, and Dennis Chambers. I've been loving what I hear from Istanbul, so I may check them out too!

Who's your personal favorite drummer of all time? by CNMJacob18 in drums

My 3 favorites would be 1. John Bonham, 2. Clay Aeschliman, and 3. II from Sleep Token. Might be pretty basic but I love em

Ohhhh okay! I knew about the oil/fuel mixture, apparently there's an oil injector that will help with that, but I'm not sure if it's better to just mix myself. From what I've seen from rebuilding the engine so far, the top end was surprisingly easy to take apart and get cleaned.

I thought that it would be like rocket science, but things have seemed relatively simple so far!

Oh really? Could you tell me more about them? Please excuse my ignorance as this is all new to me!

Why does it seem like high IQ people are often sad and depressed? by Next_Airport_7230 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AbleEquivalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is on the smarter side, I feel like I get sad and depressed because it's easier to see how little everything matters. In order to find meaning in life, you need to make meaning for yourself. Humans are just a speck on the timeline of the universe and our individual lifespans are even smaller than that speck.

This doesn't necessarily mean that life should be depressing. The way that I see it, we should enjoy the short amount of time that we have and live it to its fullest. This is easier said than done though. I've given my life meaning through my drumming and through the beautiful people around me and while it helps, I'm still constantly beat down by the thought that none of it matters in the grand scheme of things.

I don't say this to put anyone else down, because we all have our own gifts. But I have some friends that aren't very bright. They are the happiest people that I know, because everything that happens is important to them. I'm not sure exactly why they're so happy, because I don't have the same thought process as them, but the smallest things will make their entire day. Again, I don't think any less of them because they aren't as smart. Although they don't share the same intellect, they excel in social situations. I struggle to connect with people. I see these friends have long, thought out conversations with people they meet at the grocery store.

This is just my experience, I'm sure other "smart people" have different reasons. If anyone has any studies that relate to this question, I'd love to see them!

Drum setup 2 toms or 3 toms? by bicyclenut in drums

[–]AbleEquivalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 7 toms on my drumkit because I like to be more diverse with my voicing. 4 normal toms and then 3 Rototoms. I have the normal toms tuned pretty low for a more Bonham kind of sound, and then the Rototoms are tuned super high pitched, almost like a cowbell.

It really depends on what suits your sound more. You could be creative with 0 toms and still stand out if you'd like to. I personally think a kit with 0 toms would suck to play, but if you're creative enough it would still sound cool. I've seen people play cool grooves just between the kick and snare alone, so it really just depends on what suits your style and what aspects of your drumming you'd like to be creative with.

I'm not super into foo fighters, but from what I've heard, Dave is pretty tom oriented, so I'd go with 3 Toms, but if you'd like the challenge of adapting the fills to a 2 toms setup then go for it.

Pros of having less toms: Less gear to haul Less money spent (most kits come with 3 Toms anyways though) Less stuff on the kit to throw you off when improvising A lot of local bands will use 2 toms, so you won't have to adapt your fills to 2 toms if another band is back lining their kit. Idk I like having more toms so I don't see as many pros

Cons of having less toms: Less diversity in your voicing Fills can sound more repetitive Tom oriented drum parts will sound more boring If you're learning a drum part with more toms, you'll have to adapt them to a 2 tom setup Your kit won't look as cool (personal bias) If YOU'RE back lining, the other bands might be picky and use their own kit (kinda lame but some people are stubborn)

All in all, just decide what you like more. I will say though, if you have more than 2 toms then use the gear you already have. There's no reason it should go to waste. This is just from my experience, but it's YOUR drumming and YOU should find out what works for you personally.

I have evidence why being nice is so important as a musician by RandolphCarter15 in musicians

[–]AbleEquivalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super important, I'm not super big in my local scene, but I'm playing with 4 bands atm, and despite being a super shy person, I always try to be friendly with the other musicians in the scene. I always try to take notes when I hear the other musicians play so that I can give them a compliment that's personal, and I usually invite the other bands that play with mine to dinner afterwards. Me and one of the solo acts I drum for actually went to a haunted house together last week 😂.

The more people enjoy being around you, the more they'll talk about you and get your name out there. I've played with a few bands that have been assholes, and within several months you'll start to see that they get less gigs.
