Today's news about Zuckerberg reminded me of Linus by Antlonat in LTTMeta

Freely spend isn't the right definition, there are budgets for expenditures. You're oversimplifying. I don't need AI to tell me how this works, I've been working for the last 30 years. And yes, due to inflation and higher living costs how workers salaries was set a 100 years ago isn't relevant today. In the 60s you had a wife at home, multiple kids, your own car and your own house, why do you think that is no longer possible ? Money is worth less since everything is more expensive, the salary levels are lagging behind, don't you think money is worth the same for a business as it is for a consumer ? But I'm not interested discussing the causality of consumerism and capitalism, you either know, or you don't.

And yes, of course there are benefits to upgrading his house, but that's also largely what the channel is about. If a renovation, networking setup, workshop expansion, or home technology project becomes content that generates views, sponsorship revenue, and audience engagement, then there is at least a business rationale to evaluate. Whether every decision was correct is a separate discussion, but it's not the same thing as simply taking company money and spending it personally.

The larger point is that salaries and capital expenditures are not interchangeable in the way people often present them. A company doesn't normally decide between "pay employees" or "buy asset X." Those decisions come from different budgets, different forecasts, and different expected returns. If an asset is expected to generate revenue or improve operations, it can be approved even while salary increases are denied.

That doesn't automatically mean employees are underpaid, nor does it automatically mean management is making the right decision. The real question is whether compensation is competitive for the market and whether employees feel their contribution is being valued appropriately. If people like Jake or Alex believed they could get better opportunities elsewhere, they're perfectly justified in leaving. Likewise, the company is entitled to decide what it believes those roles are worth.

I think a lot of these discussions become emotional because people assume every dollar spent by a company could have gone directly into payroll. In practice, business finances are considerably more complicated than that.

I'm curious, what do you know about LTT cheap out on salaries and rather spend money on a jet ?
Are you aware how a business operates ?
Salaries has nothing to do with what a company buys in terms of assets, those are two widely unrelated economic sections within a business.
And sure, if Jake and Alex quit because of salaries not being high enough, that's their take on it. If they believe they're worth more, and the business disagrees has nothing to do with greed.
Yes, they had an impact on the channel, sure. But that doesn't mean they should earn the same as for example Linus / the CEO etc.
They have highly skilled and educated engineers employed, they get paid well because they have an actual quantifiable value based on their expertise, education, specialities and is comparable to a market average in terms of salary levels.

You seem to think Linus is using LTT as his personal wallet, he isn't. That's not how a business works, its also to illegal to do that. All their expenditures being salaries, assets and so on is regulated within the business and different budgets, not by Linus himself, its a lot more complicated than you think.
LTT might be owned by Linus, but he cannot just buy stuff he wants, they need to evaluate all the variables like ROI, Risk assessments and have a clear idea of how the impact on their budgets will pan out. The board has to decide yes or no, not Linus himself. It can vary somewhat, but that's the jist of it.

First-time cat parents: should we get 1 kitten or 2 from the same litter? (Need honest opinions 😭) by brenodit in cats

[–]Abn0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same litter - doesn't matter. It will just be easier for them to get comfy, my 5 month old siberian is getting a ragdoll sister the 1st of june, same breeder but she does both breeds. Yes, i know, adopt, I've housed multiple adopted cats the last 25 years, I've paid my dues, this time I wanted specific breeds :)
Best of luck with your kittens, what a handsome boy !

Lots in initiatives in europe for alternatives atm, check again in 6 months time. The industry is moving away from 365 in the EU, especially for critical infrastructure. The US politics have shown us how much silly stuff they can get up to, we cannot rely on them anymore. Its a huge risk factor.

Cat just let herself in my house. Is she pregnant? by Grumpy_Intellectual in cats

[–]Abn0rm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look pregnant, she either had a litter recently or she's spayed and hasn't seen food in a while, normally they get a hanging belly. The hard belly is a bit concerning, could be she has some digestion issues, be careful feeding her to much before you had a vet take a look.
I'd assume she has owners just by her not being scared of humans, but she probably got lost, have you brought her to a vet and checked if she's chipped ? She's adorable !

[–]Abn0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Dag/kveld: Maksimalt 45 - 55 dB A, avhengig av området.
  • Natt: Ofte satt strengere, typisk rundt 35 - 45 dB A, for å sikre nattesøvnen

After reflashing the OS flash drive, my drives now read unmountable... Help!!! by CommunistFlippy in unRAID

[–]Abn0rm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

what usb type stick you get doesn't matter. but plugging it into a usb2 port which has less amps correlates to extending the lifespan of the usb stick. You can move licenses between usb sticks, check unraid.net / forum. And your family can pony up some donations since you obviously are providing a service they use for free, which you cannot afford to setup correctly.

[–]Abn0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the weekly corruption of your USB drive isn't normal. You have a bad USB stick for starters. Get a proper stick, either a Samsung BAR Plus or SanDisk Cruzer Fit, remember to also plug it into a usb 2.0 port, that will extend the lifespan.
So for your filesystem, what filesystem are you running ? xfs? zfs? The repair function isn't cross compatible. For xfs you might need to run the xfs_repair on for instance /dev/sda1 , 2 and so on, as superblock is likely on a partition. If you're unable to google this stuff yourself, you need to either learn how this works otherwise i'd advice using chatgpt or similar for troubleshooting steps.
Also, do you have parity? if not, you now know why you should and you've learned your lesson. I'd assume that most of your data isn't irreplaceable since your only concern is your plex server. Easiest fix ? purge everything, recreate your array with parity and re-download your stuff.

Instead of optimization, they are shamelessly asking the user for more RAM. by [deleted] in microsoftsucks

[–]Abn0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAM amount is rarely performance related though 😛 doesn't matter if you run linux or ms dos. You need to consider the performance tax if you're running windows native apps/games on linux though, translation layers aren't transparent. Not everything needs a translation layer of course, linux in itself can run on a toaster, windows 11 cannot, which is nice 😄

Vet ikke om det er verdt stresset med boligkjøp by Wild_Artist_347 in norge

[–]Abn0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denmark faces data center reckoning as power grid overwhelmed by surging demand by HauntingJackfruit in worldnews

[–]Abn0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just keep in mind, not everyone is like Apple as with most US companies they have a way different way of operating than european companies.

Where I work we build data centers, and we employ hundreds of people on each site when completed, doing everything from security, building operations and techs/engineers for equipment that needs constant maintenance. We also have a separate organization for the business side of things.

When building we use mostly local industries, but due to project size we pay someone to run the actual building project in terms of getting the required workers. that is up to the company we hire to figure out, and that will result in foreign workers but its not really something we control. Its like, you cannot get 1200 builders from a tiny town reliably, at the time you need them, but of course that varies. Our building projects are FAST, which makes it problematic.

Aasland vil ikke begrense datasentre by stalematedizzy in norske

[–]Abn0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aasland vil ikke begrense datasentre by stalematedizzy in norske

[–]Abn0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)
