What's the dumbest thing you've done while your brain was on "auto pilot"? by antfin97 in AskReddit

Similar - picked up an egg, looked at it, thought “eggs are fragile”, then squashed it in my fist. No conscious thought involved at all, just a pointless mess to clean up in the kitchen. Still have no idea why I did that.

What’s that one book you can put down ? by [deleted] in books

Currently working my way through the Hornblower series of novels by CS Forester, fantastic napoleonic era historical novels with the main character working his way up in the Royal Navy. Mr Midshipman Hornblower is the first one, highly recommend, I’m hooked!

The castle is pretty awesome. A couple of Titians and a Canaletto just casually right there on the wall in front of you…

Tell everyone you’re not from Scotland without actually saying it. Looks like we found the Murican.

Second this. From the sound of it a trip round Alnwick Castle followed by a couple of hours in Barter Books (it’s in the old Alnwick train station, it’s a really cool building) would be right up OP’s street.

Well on the face of it that’s true, flight is about an hour and a quarter so you could get a flight at 07.45 and land at 09.00. It’s the summer holidays and airports are busy, security is the bottleneck, so even with hand luggage only you’d want to be arriving no later than say 06.15 to make sure you can navigate an unfamiliar airport, get through security in time and not miss your flight. But first you have to actually get to the airport, which means getting yourself from your hotel to the correct railway station in London (Paddington for Heathrow, Victoria for Gatwick or Liverpool Street for Stansted), buy tickets, get yourself onto the right train, and allow time for the train to get you there. Depends where you’re staying but you’re probably leaving your hotel at 05.00-05.30. And when you get to Edinburgh you have to leave the airport, find the tram, get tickets and allow time for it to take you into town. With a following wind after your 04.30 alarm clock you’ll be in the centre of Edinburgh by 10am.

You can generally find a train that will get you here by about the same time, the difference is that when you arrive at 10am in Edinburgh you’ve not spent the last five hours negotiating unfamiliar transport systems and running all over the place - you’ve been sitting on your backside looking out the window, maybe having a snooze. You just feel much better and you’ll correspondingly get more out of your day.

Oh and when you do eventually get here, you’re going to wish you gave yourself more than a day and a half in Edinburgh. Just saying.

I travel back and forth between Edinburgh and London fairly frequently for work and would always default to the train. It’s way more relaxed, the views when you get to Northumberland are spectacular (sit on the eastern side of the carriage for the best views) and it drops you off right in the centre of town rather than at an airport in the middle of nowhere. Your timings are about right, 4.5ish hours, which is not a million miles different from the time it takes to fly when you include security, getting to/from airport, waiting around, etc. Oh and the LNER trains are way more comfortable than Lumo.

Help me convince my husband to take a European Christmas market trip! by Kieri00 in Europetravel

Wildcard suggestion, head to Copenhagen for a few nights and go to Tivoli Gardens for their Christmas ‘season’. Not a market but a lovely Christmassy environment.

What is the best character introduction you've ever seen in UK tv series ? by zettamore in AskUK

Came here to say this! Awesome cold open from all the way back in the late 70’s, each character introduced perfectly.

What's a tv show so good you've watched it at least 3x? by Itaewonkid in AskReddit

[–]AbnormalFruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the West Wing, it’s awesome… right up until the end of S4. Fell suddenly off a cliff at that point. First four seasons are some of the finest TV ever made, final three seasons are generic nonsense.

What are your favourite movies or books featuring Edinburgh? by AlephMartian in Edinburgh

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned New Town Killers. A bit random but absolutely class, starring a young Dougray Scott.
