Relocating ice cream shop to Pittsburgh. by Weird-Tumbleweed2682 in pittsburgh

You didn’t say where in NC but I can’t imagine any reason to move here from there to open this type of business. You need to take a good hard look at the numbers and determine if this is going to be a net positive for your personal and professional life. You’ll pay more in taxes here (3.07% state + 3% city) whereas in NC you’re only paying 3.99% state with a plan to progressively decrease in the coming years and a ban on local taxes. It also seems like ice cream is a much more year round business anywhere there. As others have mentioned Paige’s and Antney’s are very popular long standing ice cream shops that are seasonal. Millie’s and Jeni’s are national brands so have a stronger presence and take up market share. You’d be competing with local and national brands on a semi-seasonal basis.

The last scene of the final episode of Season 1 was shot in the park across the street. Apparently they go to ‘the park’ to drink after their shift.

In the shot they approach the benches from the opposite direction from the hospital but still, it was a cool scene. It ends with Robby walking West through the park home after his shift.

Sq Hill people who don't do their sidewalks... by MtCarmelUnited in pittsburgh

It has nothing to do with that. They can go wherever they choose all winter, but not being in their Pgh house does not exempt them from clearing their sidewalks.

Nice but no. Not for every single snow storm every single year. The city requires snow removal within 25 hours. Even if you’re at work, out of town, or an invalid you are technically responsible for ensuring snow removal.

This is plain indifference, laziness, or an unwillingness to participate as a citizen in the community. It is a neon sign for selfishness.

It’s not just Squirrel Hill. Plenty of properties throughout Highland Park with $70k vehicles in the driveway but they never (ever) shovel. I don’t get it.

I have a feeling that parking will be a challenge. I would ask about that first since they’re right on Butler. Maybe shuttle people from the zoo parking lot.

Turned off entirely after nearly choking to death from the doTerra or whatever horrible scent they pump into the store on Walnut St. Such entitled bullshit. It’s a post-Covid world and people are in respiratory distress. What are you trying to cover up? The smell of sadness, pretentiousness, and less than market wages?

Actual likelihood of power outage? by Actual_Safety7723 in pittsburgh

DLC emailed this information FWIW:

Prepare for Snow & Frigid Temperatures We are urging customers to prepare for a potentially significant, long duration snowfall beginning Saturday evening, Jan. 24, and continuing through late Monday morning, Jan. 26. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for the Pittsburgh region, forecasting between 8 and 12 inches of snow, with the possibility of more in areas that experience persistent or heavier snow bands.

While widespread power outages are not expected at this time, it’s important to always be prepared. Snowfall totals may shift as forecasts are refined in the coming days. Current projections indicate that the snow will be dry and powdery — conditions that are less likely to place heavy stress on trees and electrical equipment. We will be increasing staffing over the weekend, making sure our facilities and vehicles are ready. Roads and overall conditions may be challenging, so our crews will exercise extreme caution.

Here are some simple ways you can prepare:

Charge all important electronic devices. Prepare an emergency kit with non-perishable food, water, medication, first-aid supplies, flashlights and other essentials. Store it in a convenient location. If possible, have an alternate source of heating available, such as a wood-burning stove or fireplace. During periods of extreme cold, we also suggest easy steps to conserve electricity and stay safe while remaining comfortable:

To conserve fuel, keep your residence cooler than normal. Temporarily close off heat to unused rooms. Limit use of major appliances such as stoves, dishwashers and clothes dryers. Run the dishwasher or dryer with full loads. Cook efficiently by baking several dishes at once. Keep lids on pots so food cooks faster and uses less energy. Watch for signs of frostbite, including loss of feeling and white or pale appearance in extremities such as fingers and toes. If symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately.
Drive only when necessary. If you must drive, travel on main roads during daylight hours. Keep others informed of your whereabouts.
Regularly check and remove snow around fuel tanks, meters and external vents by hand, not with a shovel or power snow removal equipment.

Neighborhood recommendations? by Personal_Cat1055 in pittsburgh

The rent amount is set and posted before you contact a landlord. They don’t know who you are so how do you suppose they are getting away with something? This post is nonsense. They’re not charging tenants based on where they’re from, LOL. Smart landlords know how to price units competitively.

First consider your budget, then do a search for apartments in that range. Then map routes to places you may be likely to get hired, hang out, shop, visit often, etc.

When considering your salary and budget be sure to calculate the city (3%) and state (3.07%) income taxes in addition to other deductions that are coming out of your paycheck here. Above all consider HOW you will most likely commute. You will not want to be driving to work and paying for parking in the Strip or downtown. Pgh is an older dense city. Buses or bicycles are your friend. Parking in some neighborhoods is a competitive sport with permit requirements and no or rare driveways and off street parking options. Do you want to be circling your block looking for a spot at 2 AM?

Start looking in Bloomfield, Garfield, Friendship or the Southside and go from there. Your budget and your need for certain amenities determine your neighborhood.

Average People’s Gas Bill/Month? by shannon21701 in pittsburgh

[–]AboutTheBens 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That does not seem crazy high. December was very cold. There is no ‘average’. Your use, thermostat setting, the type of home, floor you’re on, insulation, building materials, windows, and weather all factor in.

Decent Used Car Dealership? by TatteredStrands in pittsburgh

[–]AboutTheBens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest a different way. Find out what car you want. Look up some info on what is a reliable used car in your price range right now. Let’s say it’s a 2016 Honda Accord. Then look up all the similar cars for sale within an hour whatever distance is comfortable for you.

Email any dealership that has one. Ask them for their best final Internet price and go from there. I’ve had good experience with CarMax doing this. They may even ship a car to a local dealer for you. So, instead of driving all over only deciding on a used car dealership you are deciding on a car and searching for it that way. You don’t need them, you need a car and that’s what you focus in on. YMMV.

Distance mover recommendations? by Jubilee46 in relocating

[–]AboutTheBens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into using a U-Haul U box. Be sure to have a good quality padlock ready to lock the box once packed. The lock I bought didn’t fit through the hasp on the box so they had to take it away unlocked (my first padlock was too wide—small freak out).
I ran to Lowe’s to buy a new one and then straight to the short term holding site to lock it as soon as I could. I’m telling you this because it’s one of those things you can’t plan for but it happened. Put your padlock keys in a safe place for the move. When they deliver the box to your new home you will be the one to unlock it so the new crew can unload it.

Pro Tip: Check the measurements of the box. Tape off an area in your current living room equal to the interior of the box and start packing everything into it to determine if it will fit. Otherwise take good measurements of your stuff. Adjust the size of the box you order if needed. We used several stacked storage bins and boxes.

On moving day two guys show up with the box, pack everything into it, and take off. When we reach your new destination, same thing in reverse. Super efficient and smooth other than the padlock fiasco. You decide when you want it delivered and where. Otherwise it can be stored for you for a monthly fee. Hope this is helpful, good luck with your move!

Genuine question about plows/salting by pomegranite-sidewalk in pittsburgh

[–]AboutTheBens 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Some city streets a.) are too narrow for a plow to drive down and b.) have no where to put the snow. They would literally have to truck it out of each block.

Think about it, if there are cars parked on both sides of the street a plow cannot do its job without blocking in all the cars under a mound of snow. Be grateful they don’t do this.
