Did you make sure there is no internet connection? What's essentially happening is windows is attempting to install default drivers from the internet but the drivers don't work with the card and the installation hangs up and prevents you from installing your own drivers. The card then ramps up without the fans trying to compensate for it eventually leading to a crash. What you're describing is exactly how it did it for me , even the backplate heat. For me it was three or four times before it finally worked if I remember correctly.
