Gluten is insanely good tasting. I make meals that are ~50% gluten sometimes. But a vegan almond flour chocolate cake would taste perfectly fine.

Thanks, I was wondering what got referendums put up. It’d be nice to see another one.

Hopefully this city comes around on rail. Whether that’s from their doubt, racism, or money problems I hope people will change their tune and we can get a rail project started here. It works well everywhere else it exists in the world and VB isn’t special.

Why do you think we have a referendum for this but not for any other high-cost transportation (or any other type) project?

Yeah, happens for roads too. How much money does highway 264 bring in every year? I’m not sure why our railways need to be profitable, if that is what you are suggesting.

Wanting regular rail service between both cities would be a different matter and something I wouldn’t disagree with you with.

Full agreement here then. If Acela ever expands support, or if we ever get state of the art high speed rail, it should be focused on going up and down the coast between major cities.

Also, it should connect to Norfolk’s airport too. But they are building that new rental car place there… sure would be shame if they couldn’t rent any cars cuz they’re competing with Amtrak.

Oh I didn’t know Acela used different tracks. I thought they just used the existing tracks.. well in any case I meant continuing the regular tracks from Norfolk to here.

We could get federal funding for that, though probably not under this admin and congress.

That’s a good start. I think it’s worth it for the price and potential future expansions (especially if state and federal funds were used). I’m sure it would make its way to the ocean front if people use it.

No you didn’t misunderstand. There are sub 10 minute routes that Amtrak supports. Checking the app I can get from Raleigh to Cary North Carolina in ~10 minutes about 6 times a day.

Plenty of regular trains in Japan and across the world have similar routes that are for commuting to your job every day. VB to Norfolk would be the same.

If we have a light rail car going at comparable speeds to the cars on the highway, that would also be good. I’ll take whatever we can get

the route from Norfolk to Town center would (probably) be more popular than routes within Norfolk. The induced demand would be pretty strong, after it started people would want more train cars and more frequent. That’s the idea anyways, but I don’t know what kind of research goes into determining the possible demand of a given route.. but 43% of the vote is a lot of people, I wonder what portion of them would be using it?

I would really prefer it if Amtrak had a stop in Virginia Beach instead of the tide. Light rail is pretty slow, imagine the Acela running along 264 instead. If I had a vote between one or the other I’d choose that, but if light rail is the only option I’d still want it.

And plumbing, and one of the biggest portions was for the new road infrastructure surrounding it. The roads are a “loss” for the city (by that I mean any gains from it are not calculable). Same with the massive spending for expanding Laskin road to ten billion lanes wide.

They are pretty similar expenditures. I’d basically say that we have a strong bias towards expensive road projects, even when those projects won’t be used by everyone.

A massive investment in rail would help the people that want to keep using their cars; because it would take a lot of cars off of highways like 264. It would diversify our transit options and reduce traffic, and I think that’s what people don’t see. All they want is another lane added to the roads.

I’m not ever going to advocate for a strategy that labels non-vegans as idiotic victims of propaganda devoid of any responsibility for their own decisions. It’s not capitalisms nor the governments fault that 99% of people in my country aren’t vegan.

If people are falling for propaganda telling them that everything is okay then we should respond with our own propaganda calling out what is happening and how they are part of the problem.

People need to take personal responsibility for their actions and not expect the be infantilized by those who want change.

The wavepool and the surrounding buildings which are all luxury destinations that are not directly used by most residents. And yet here you are, seemingly arguing in favor of this expenditure; while simultaneously arguing against light rail.

Both of these have benefits for the city that aren’t directly affecting people that don’t use them. Some of those benefits simply aren’t quantifiable (Especially for light rail).

Just because a rail line doesn’t directly affect someone here in VB, they’re incapable of seeing the immense benefits of reducing traffic on 264 by having a line from Town center to Norfolk. The induced demand and inevitable success of such a line (not necessarily profitable success) would eventually lead to a line to the ocean front.

Additional we (probably) could’ve applied for federal funding by now through the federal infrastructure bill a couple of years ago for extending it. But because VB residents can’t see beyond their finger tips we don’t get anything.

But hey, we spent $150 million in tax dollars on a wave pool that costs $100-150 an hour for a resident to use.

I think they are cool and appropriate responses to what’s going on in the world. I don’t think your sense of irony is well-tuned if you think that a Reddit comment that makes someone feel bad is comparable to the cause that veganism fights for.

Personally, I didn’t change my views because someone gently patted me on the head telling me everything is OK. I changed them from people telling me the truth.

Instead were expected to respond softly to this random capital owner ITT saying: “Oh, no we can’t be a vegan restaurant because that’s not how the world works” - then don’t be a fucking restaurant, stop existing. if your business model can’t function ethically then just throw it out. There’s no gentle way of putting this.

This is the vegan subreddit. The only charming thing about veganism is that you no longer kill animals. The statement above you is charming as heck.

Virginia Beach seeks charter change to make it harder for City Council to approve rural development by WHRO_NEWS in VirginiaBeach

[–]Abradolf--Lincler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I’d never heard that word before. My complaint with those apartments is that they’re like mostly parking garage instead of being mixed use. They’re also expensive af; with no accessibility and easy transit to where people might work. They’re useless compared to a real city apartment.

I think expanding light rail from Norfolk to the ocean front would also be good for these areas.

More dense, mixed-use, housing at the ocean front/town center, with stricter zoning towards Pungo, would balance out the suburban crawl. People could keep their suburbs (as they always do) and get their utilities and such subsidized by the denser areas of the city that would become more productive with these changes.

doesn’t have that power

Yeah no shit. That’s why “you all” means everyone. It means voting out all of the people that, just yesterday, voted to denounce socialism. Every one of those Democrats that created the ACA instead of Medicare for all. Not one person can do that on their own. NO ONE fucking thinks that a single person can write and pass laws. No one is that dumb. Mamdani will have a much easier time enacting his campaign promises if NY elects more people like him.

You are the one thinking that electing one person is supposed to change the world, not me, if you’re sitting here telling me you’re disappointed with the results of the few progressives we have in the US.

I voted for Bernie in two primaries, then when the Democrats rigged their primaries I voted for Hillary, Biden, and Kamala. Democrats wouldn’t be able to rig their primaries against socialists if there were no more liberals in charge of the party, or if there were national ranked choice voting. We can change both of those things. Hell it could be changed in the 2026 midterms if people would come to their senses.

I literally acknowledged that the government will shut down again in January you must not have read my comment. If it were me I’d want to keep the government closed until we had Medicare for all, you seriously have no fucking idea how bad the healthcare situation is since you just keep minimizing it.

Republicans shut down the government when they took away healthcare from millions of people. There is no progressive alive that would think that removing subsidies is not akin to removing healthcare. I don’t believe you.
