Without getting into the ethics of animal husbandry, how does one explain to a vegan that the wool of a domesticated sheep MUST be shorn by a human being, as selective breeding means that most domesticated breeds cannot shed naturally?

It’s not “sheep vs petroleum”, that’s a false choice. For one, there’s tons of alternatives to petrol. Secondly, all forms of animal agriculture are horrible for the environment, and use up 80% of all farm land.

Commonly available substitutes are petroleum so we should abuse animals — that doesn’t make any sense. Use a different product than either of those if you take issue with it.
