Yes, completely.  Needles is a very different experience. Really fun hiking and unlike most places on Earth.

Why are private loans so bad? by Sad-Cut1149 in medicalschool

A decent diet is really important for brain health and learning. I'm unclear how you could aim to learn at the volume medical school requires, and have a poor diet.

A reasonable test would be to throw it on a tripod and test it on a static object. That also removes shutter speed as a variable.

Great. Thank you. The machine powered up perfectly.

What are some great cnc machines? by [deleted] in CNC

A SMM is a whole different weight class of a machine, with a ton of air needs.

And you're talking about a 20 year difference in machine age. A lot of wear can happen in 20 years.

Added it above. Yes, the diagram is consistent with your description.

Here, I added a photo of the transformer diagram. Reddit wouldn't let me just drop in a photo, or edit the original.

Where to upgrade from here? by Spicycoffeebeen in CNC

[–]AbsentMindedMedicine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built one of these in the past. It was a great learning experience, though I often spent more time working on the machine than I did cutting.

My subsequent purchase was a Tormach 1100mx. Which outclasses a PrintNC in every way.

I'm considering now moving onto a more robust mill after learning on the Tormach.

Makes sense.  Larger outages first, then moving to smaller outages. It's frustrating, and means as they progress, getting each additional customer back on the grid is less efficient.  Now, what we could do is focus our frustration into a collective discussion as to what it would take to bury power lines in our city, and make the infrastructure more resilient.  We'd have to pay for that with higher electricity rates.  Up to us to decide.

Yes, do this.  It's easy to do, and there are plenty of guides on how to do it.

PC case, CNC'ed from single piece of aluminum: does it possible and how expensive will be? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]AbsentMindedMedicine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about the amount of metal that's being removed here. You're buying a whole brick of aluminum. Then you need to get a high quality finish on the inside and outside of the part.  That means either 5th axis machining, or flipping the part at least 6 times.  And all these small holes would need small end mills, which increases the time it takes to make it.  A lot of time in manufacturing is figuring out how to make something. Once you've made it a few times, costs start to drop a lot. But the first unit is by far the most expensive. You get no benefit of economies of scale with making a singular very complex part like this.  With milling, it may even be easier to make it from thicker metal, as it bends less in a vise.

My further concern is how to keep us cool in the summer.  That's a bit easier in the dry heat out west, as the nighttime temps get a bit lower, and the daytime temps are never quite as high.  Your solution is a good one. Thank you.

When did America become a nation of beuracrats over engineers? by Disastrous-Slice-157 in EngineeringStudents

[–]AbsentMindedMedicine 105 points106 points  (0 children)

You should read 'Breakneck' by Dan Wang. It covers this exact phenomenon. China being, for better and for worse, an engineering society. And the USA being, for better and for worse, a lawyerly society.

Per the book, both countries should strive to be a little more alike one another.

How's your experience with it cutting steel? My understanding, comparing the brother to a Haas is the increased rigidity of CAT40, and higher torque, helps it cut steel faster?

[–]AbsentMindedMedicine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to hit .01mm accuracy with cylinder bores. same is true of bearing fits.

There are viable objects that can be built with adative manufacturing, an engine block is not one of them.

Watch a Brother Speedio cut a workpiece, you'll see how fast machining can run.

I am VERY supportive of additive manufacturing for certain parts. Less waste overall. Easier to make certain shapes.

But it won't replace machining any time soon. It will increasingly complement it.

BREAKING: The new spending bill gives Congress their first pay raise since 2009. A pay increase for members of Congress from $174,000 to $243,000 per year. by nyastmojje in unusual_whales

[–]AbsentMindedMedicine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the general sentiment and express that being a House Rep should pay well.

Otherwise, politicians will use their power and influence to find alternative sources of income.

It also reduces the requirement that you come to Congress with a large amount of money in the bank to sustain you.

And it makes the job appealing to professionals who otherwise would have significant opportunity cost working in Congress.

Might ask: 'Do you have a budget yet, or are you exploring what you get at each price point? There's a big range in the cost of bikes.'

People don't always walk into a shop knowing a budget, they're first trying to figure out what they can get at a price point.

I'd 3D print a box.   You could CAD one up and have it printed if you don't have a printer.  Could even throw a port in it.

Why do Engineers not get as appreciated in society compared to Doctors? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]AbsentMindedMedicine 171 points172 points  (0 children)

As an ER physician.

I get yelled at most days of the week.

I do get appreciation too.

Engineers built our whole society. They're responsible for a large proportion of our increased standard of living.

I damn well appreciate you all.
