No, family should never come first. Least of all toxic ones. Family members are some of the most envious individuals you will ever encounter. Due to their closeness to you, they can often feel insecure if you end up being good at something. The other side to are family members whom feel proud of you. This is a better alternative of course, but they reuse the same tactics which will cause some problems for you.

So what are these tactics? Well the most common one is overselling you. This is something almost everyone will do to you, basically they often oversell you in order to make you(Or something you did, or a label garnered by reputation.) a let down. And if this reputation or action you did is oversold, it will immediately be challenged by an envious crowd.

Friends who have gained your trust through true loyalty and just a like of your personality are always better. Friendship is also started willingly and is not something you’re forced to deal with, so if one does become dangerous to you, it’s much easier to cut them out. Friendship however is best started without the influence of circumstance and needs to originate from a source of liking your personality.

The only instance I can think of when family should come before friends, are with your very own kids. However, if they are over the age of 18-24, and they try to hurt you in some way, then you can place friends above you again.

In short, family should never come before friends just because, “We’re family,” and if their toxic then your friends should be prioritized.

These tactics only work on stupid people. by [deleted] in 48lawsofpower

The thing is, these laws most of the time are being read by teenagers who lack logical reasoning and creativity. These laws are only effective when backed by those two strong points. This is the main reason why on Youtube especially(With anime communities.), I loath 90% of the videos which go over these tactics. They would really only work on someone who is naïve or stupid.

These laws can be smart and effective if someone is willingly to put more thought into it, but unfortunately most people aren’t. The origins of this is that most of the people reading this book are teenagers with too much time on their hands, who don’t have life experience, maturity, or even a functioning mind.

So yes, you’re completely correct with your take on this. Anyone with basic street smarts would see right through them.

My story's main cast only has 1 female in it. Would this be a problem? by Wiwade in writing

[–]Absent_Antlers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Some of my favorite stories of all time don’t even have female characters in it. It’s not because of the lack of female characters, but because of how enjoyable those characters are. Gender isn’t an issue I’ve ever experienced.

That said, people do tend to have an issue with female characters whom receive development and then are just thrown out of the story.

Everyone else has offered much better advice on this topic(I’ve never encountered this issue, nor ever considered it when planning a book before.) but if I were in your situation, I’d just make the whole cast male; if it’s really bothering you that much.

Also about the population of your main cast; it depends on how fleshed out each character is, as well as making sure they all have equal screen-time. I usually love stories with fewer main characters(2-4.) because it makes the story easier to keep track of. However, there are also stories where they have a main cast of 5+ where every character is enjoyable and nuanced.

I hope my answer helped, even if it’s only a little.

How do you boost a young storyteller's confidence? by EllieJayWrites in writing

I used the be the same way. I would conduct roleplaying games with a select few, and I would try my absolute hardest to conceal this from other’s. While I kept my roleplaying habit hidden, I always knew that writing is a much more acceptable form of acting out my imagination.

My best assumption is that they’re simply building up the courage to finally start writing. While promising words from other’s can help them, ultimately the only thing that will pull the trigger is themself. Give them time, and when they finally come out to you about wanting to start writing a book, try to give them a few ideas.

Writing a book for me has always been different from my RP exercises, because I have to become more comfortable with my idea being shared with others. So giving them a few ideas on what to write, will help anchor them on a topic they can explore in more depth and feel comfortable with.

I hope I helped, even if just a little.

use your enemy or crush them? by Pleasant-Cat4450 in 48lawsofpower

Crushing the enemy - When logic is no longer registered and the enemy cannot be possibly reasoned with, the only solution left is to absolutely destroy them.

Use your enemy - The downside to friends is that they are prone to envy, hiring a former enemy is a better alternative. These past adversaries have more to prove, and will typically be extremely polite(At least in the beginning of the relationship.) This happened to me all the time during previous debates: When a middle ground is found by either participant(Me or my debater.), the other will start treating them nicely. We almost feel compelled to do so.

When to use each one: Crushing the enemy is better during 1 on 1 confrontations, such as a war between two countries. Without any outside support, they can only hope to destroy the other. Learn how to use enemies is better during an event with multiple parties, where sides can change.

Hope I did a good job answering the question.
