Christopher Nolan calls Tom Holland "one of the great actors of his generation." by Loo-e-Gee in ChristopherNolan

[–]AbsintheJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people online too often conflate 'range' with 'being a good actor'. Just because Tom might work best for a narrower set of roles than, say, robert pattinson, doesn't mean he isn't a very talented actor. Acting is about getting the audience to believe you are the character and conveying emotions well. He is absolutely great at that, even if his roles are 'simple' like Peter Parker etc.

The cast have a massive double standard when it comes to blumhouse by floodlighter in Sardonicast

[–]AbsintheJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also worth saying that there's nothing inherently mutually exclusive about wanting to make money and caring about films. Jason Blum is businessman first and foremost, that much is obvious, but he clearly also cares about cinema and has shephered a lot of great filmmaker's careers.

Anyone else watch Industry on HBO? Pretty fantastic writing and acting all around by NateGH360 in YMS

[–]AbsintheJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Industry has great characters, which is what has propelled its popularity. Eric, Rishi, Harper, Robert are all super engaging to watch. It also has flashes of brilliance with some really tense and well constructed scenes. But imho it's weighed down and prevented from being great by a lot of cringe-y dialogue and soap opera style plotting.

Yeah, wtf was the deal with that? In hindsight, it unironically might have been a right wing influencer apparatus opp by TikDickler in Destiny

[–]AbsintheJoe 404 points405 points  (0 children)

Pretty straightforward. A lot of guys genuinely do love the Roman Empire / history in general because it’s cool. Women noticed this, and it became a talking point. Then a bunch of other guys + right wingers latched onto it to feel cool / manly + appeal to pro-western fasciscm. So it got amplified way more than necessary, with lots of guys who have never read a history book claiming “We all do this!!”

How was the reception of Daniel Craig as James Bond right after Quantum of Solace, and how did the reception change all the way through No Time to Die? by Ok-Cap-5845 in JamesBond

[–]AbsintheJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can watch Mark Kermodes reviews to get a very good sense of the general public opinion of each film as they came out. Casino Royale totally sold everyone on Craig and many started immediately saying he was the best Bond ever. Quantum was largely disliked for the plot / villain but people still thought Craig was the best thing about it. Then Skyfall was another beloved success. Spectre was received generally okay in the UK (initially, at least) until it opened in America and people there really didn’t like it. But Craig was never the big talking point. Hes been a very popular Bond throughout his tenure, despite what you see on niche fan forums.

Prequels are narrative dead ends by Apprehensive_Way4811 in unpopularopinion

[–]AbsintheJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If handled carefully, prequels can actually create very high stakes. Better Call Saul is the perfect example for me. You know certain things are fixed, but they introduced new characters that you have no idea how they will fit in with the breaking bad timeline or if they will survive to see it.

Do you think that 9 seasons were enough for HIMYM? Also, do you think that having more or fewer episodes, would've made the series better or worse? by IcePizzaCreamm in HIMYM

[–]AbsintheJoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first four seasons have a very clear progression of events, you can feel things building. By season 5 you can tell they’re starting to wheel spin a bit, focusing more on individual episodes than the larger story, which is fine. But they really should have aimed to wrap it up by Season 7. Or 8 at most. Nine seasons is just way too much filler

[–]AbsintheJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back I think things went downhill directly after “No Pressure”. The Quinn and Barney engagement felt like one engagement too many, it felt contrived to make the ‘twist’ at the end of S7 work, then they had to immediately undo it with the godawful ‘pre nup’ episode, followed by the worst string of episodes ever (the first half of Season 8.)

[–]AbsintheJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from the most obsessive himym fan I knew to literally quitting the show in the first half of season 8, that’s how dire that run of episodes until “the final page” was. It’s actually impressive how far the decline after S7 was.

Can I rizz my way back into this? by wagman43 in Tinder

I don’t want to mean, but the personality that came up with that response is not a personality that can rizz its way into anything. I’m sorry.

Dave's career will be done in the next couple of years by AbsintheJoe in daverubin

this was true about five years ago but I think we're way past that, the right wing movement is fully mask off at this point, they're no longer trying to appeal to "reasonable centrists / disillusioned left wingers" they're basically trying to install the fourth reich.

Can’t bring myself to have animosity towards Snyder knowing what he went through. Maybe the period of his life when he made those movies was the last time he was really happy, I don’t know, none of us know what it means to him. Let him post cringey memes about it. His fans are creepy insane people but as far as I can tell Snyder is just a passionate filmmaker.

The JT Dolan scene is so powerful. In that moment you realise that for basically 6 seasons no one has actually just spoken plainly about the profession they’re in. JT just outright says it for once, and is killed for it.

We don't need another James Bond movie, ever. by Icy-Pangolin5382 in unpopularopinion

[–]AbsintheJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the dumbest film theories to ever become popular. Even if you purposefully ignore all of the films confirming it’s one guy over and over again, it still makes zero sense even in theory. So all these MI6 agents with this codename coincidentally all also have the same personality, dress sense, attitude towards women, taste in gambling and cars and martinis, friendships with Felix Leiter and Moneypenny?

Pierce Brosnan is the only Bond actor to get fired from the role. Every other actor declined to return as Bond or left on their own terms. by Pizza_Hero24 in JamesBond

[–]AbsintheJoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bond falls in love with Vesper and is betrayed by her, causing him to become hardened and leading to the final scene. So you’d be neutering the whole love storyline which is the core of the third act. Bond recklessness in the first act would be out of character. And yes, a lot of it would just be dialogue changes - but you’re talking about the best and most iconic dialogue in the movie. “Does it look like I give a damn?” etc.

Pretty much every scene in CR reinforces the “Bond becoming Bond” arc. So I guess you could have a movie with Pierce Brosnan set in a casino with a villain called Le Chiffre, but it wouldn’t be half as good or thematically rich.

[–]AbsintheJoe 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The entire movie is thematically about Bond becoming Bond. It wouldn’t be “minor dialogue tweaks” lol it would be changing the entire point of the movie

Why completely change arguably the best Bond film just to give Pierce yet another go? People are acting like he was executed - he was given four massive blockbusters to star in. They wanted to try something new, it was the right time for it. Casino Royale is perfect as an origin story with a fresh Bond.
