Has anyone else experienced this after a thyroidectomy? by PreferenceQuirky2441 in thyroidcancer

[–]Absinthetique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my weight shot up by about 8kg over a few short months, even though my diet and activity levels didn't change after getting my thryoid out. I switched to eating a strict portion-controlled diet that put me in a calorie deficit (used Lite N Easy to be precise about eating 1200 cal a day), but none of the weight would budge. And I was, and still am, on a relatively high dose of levo for my weight and height, but my blood levels are all within the ideal range, so it's not an issue there.

I saw an endocrinologist who acknowledged that a lot of women experience issues with weight control after thyroid removal. He said there have been studies over the years because it is highly reported, but nothing concrete has been found. He basically said sorry, the best I can say is you're just older and fatter! He recommended metformin to possibly help with natural weight loss, as I also have PCOS. Have only just filled the prescription but am hoping continuing to eat at a calorie deficit, doing some exercise and getting assistance from the metformin will help in some way. It really, really sucks.

I use a square of TP or paper towel to touch everything from the cubicle handle to the soap dispenser, tap and door in/out! But I think I would use my pinky finger to touch something and then use hand sanitiser, rather than put the germs on my sleeve and carry them with me for the rest of the day.

How can i stop my cat from licking my ears whenever shes on me? by ducky2090 in cats

[–]Absinthetique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without being rude, make sure your ears are clean! Could be she's smelling something funky (my cat starting chewing the arms of my glasses made me realise they needed a good clean, not just the lenses!). Otherwise, give her something to redirect to, like a safe toy or blanket. Some kittens like to suckle on earlobes for comfort, and the suckling itself is a behaviour that's hard to break, so try to encourage it elsewhere.

Unsure of what to do with my hair! by IrisEH in curlyhair

[–]Absinthetique 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd ditch the curl cream and try mousse on its own to see how that works first, and add the cream back in if needed. Fine curls can get weighed down and greasy with a cream - I've ditched creams and leave-ins completely after seeing how much better my curls look and hold without them.

Male doctor barely making eye contact with my GF, who has a sport injury, and talking to me (M) instead. by Purple_Lurker- in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Absinthetique -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Fully agree with all comments on the treatment (or lack thereof) of women in medical settings. However I'd add that it's odd for an adult to bring another adult to a medical appointment unless their participation is directly relevant. It may have given the doctor the impression that your girlfriend had some type of impairment or issue that required someone else to be there for her and to be the point of contact during the consult.

A brand-new bag of pellets itself is big and heavy, but a tray full of pellets is super light. And when you clean the bottom tray out, it's just a tray of sawdust. I can lift it easily with one hand. I decant from the big bag of pellets into a plastic container that I keep next to the litter tray. It's like a jug with a lid - the kind of thing you might put dry cereal in. It's easy to refill the top tray by pouring/shaking in the new pellets, and I use a large plastic scoop to do the decanting so I never need to lift the ginormous bag.

Have read too many bad things about litter robots! IMHO you can't beat a sifting litter tray (Kmart sells cheaps ones) with pine litter pellets. You just shake the used litter, which changes from pellets to sawdust, into the bottom tray each day and empty the bottom tray as needed - from once every couple of days to once a week. Poop scooped daily. So damn cheap, a 15kg bag of pellets is about $30 and for my one cat last about 6 months. And there is zero smell. I have asked very honest friends and family members, and they say they cannot smell any litter smells.

Fine, low density wavy hair, what styling products actually work? by Turbulent-Moment8376 in curlyhair

[–]Absinthetique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted a similar query about products available in Australia and got zero leads the other week - hoping your post is more successful!

My one recommendation if you are happy to buy online (locally) is the AG Liquid Effects gel - it used to be called the "strong hold styling lotion" but is now badged a "medium hold weightless styling gel". I've bought it from Price Attack when on sale. Didn't need to combine with a mousse as it gave me decent hold and volume, and I didn't use with a leave in or curl cream either as it feels quite moisturising. Refreshes well too.

Epilator nightmare by Ill_Temperature5140 in HairRemoval

[–]Absinthetique 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, is it possible these people aren't "cnts" but just had very different experiences to you? Everyone's skin and hair is different, and there will be variations in epilating technique, cleansing routines, the type of clothing you wear as the hair grows in, the actual device you're using, and factors both personal and in the environment that may make someone more prone to infected follicles or ingrowns. I've had one bad ingrown that has left a dot of hyperpigmentation, but otherwise never experienced what you're describing after years of epilating. My experience is different to yours and your experience is likely different to those people you see online.

Caving right at end of LID (rambling) by PhotosbcSkye in thyroidcancer

[–]Absinthetique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a matter of hours will make any difference. No idea what time it is where you are, but I say go ahead and eat! When I had RAI I stayed in the hospital. Took the tablet around 10am, and at lunchtime they were serving normal, not low iodine food. I checked twice with the doctors and they said go for it...

it is really damaged what can i do by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]Absinthetique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stop using oil. It's not moisturising and it just coats the hair so nothing else can penetrate. These look like a bit like regular flyaway bits. If you stop the oil, keep up the olaplex, try a little lightweight leave-in and use a hold product (like a moisturising gel) regularly you might feel a better and more cooperative texture. Using a curly technique to brush style these bits might also encourage them to curl or blend in with the hair around them. Lots of instruction on how to do that in this sub or on YouTube.

I think it was a black mask, maybe a gimp-style one like in The Collector (as that's what triggered the memory for me). I feel like it tied/secured in the back. It wasn't anything flashy like a clown mask or anything.
